I have discovered that the good professor's article on Jake Cutter appears to conflict with another--very prestigious--published source on the issue of the nature of Cdr (Ret.) McHale's commission. In an article in the Naval History Magazine (see link below) it is asserted that "as an old tramp steamer captain, [Cdr (Ret.)] McHale was a lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve, so when the war started, naturally he went into the Navy."
I trust that upon Professor Immerschreiben's return to the University, he will explain not only this apparent discrepancy, but the others pointed out by The Captain as well.
