The Gathering came about just like the web site. It started out as just a crazy idea and then snowballed to mammoth proportions.
Here's the short version. It started when people on the boards and in our IRC chats mentioned that we should have a convention. I'm not quite sure if these people were serious, if they thought that it would be a good way for those of us who met on the site to meet in person or whatever. Anyway, since everybody had their hearts set on a convention and I'm the type of person who feels compelled to make others happy, we started to plan The Gold Monkey Gathering to take place in Van Nuys, CA so we could go visit Universal Studios and invite the stars. Some members of the cast and crew, including Stephen Collins, were regular site visitors so I naturally asked them to join us as Honored Guests for a couple of hours. Through the hard work of some fellow Monkiacs and many faxes with the staff of the Airtel Plaza Hotel, the whole thing came together. Go figure!
