Of course, Jake Cutter did have anywhere near $66,000 at the time. As is explained and fully documented in Professor Klaus Werner Immerschreiben's article in the Seiber Islands Historical Journal (see link below), Jake was given the aircraft in appreciation of his heroic efforts in saving the vacationing Grand Ducal Family of Wotanberg from pirates in August of 1938. The aircraft had been purchased by the Wotanberger Overseas Airway Company--the state-owned airline of the Grand Duchy of Wotanberg--and flown by Jake as an employee of the airline beginning in May 1938.
