It was worn in numerous '30's movies (and occasionally later) by the likes of Peter Lorre, Sidney Greenstreet, and an infinite number of genies (but not Barbara Eden). Any good Eric Ambler novel will have one villain who wears a fez.
Since the Captain's mother was a French Military Nurse in Casablanca, Morocco during what my father calls "the War" I am particularly familiar with this hat. It was worn by the Senegalese hospital guards who had filed teeth and couldn't speaka dee English or French for that matter. Find a picture of a "zouve."
It does not work well with a headset, unless crushed beyond recognition.
