A common formation during WW II was the so called
"finger four" formation developed by the Germans
in the Spanish Civil War. It looks somthing like
this:
-I-
-I- -I-
-I-
As I understand it each pair contains a leader
and a wingman. Wingman is not a rank.
I suppose the number of planes on a patrol would
vary depending on the strenght of the opposing
forces. Is it the Flying Tigers you are writing
about? Try to find some authentic litterature so
you get the right feeling.
