Session Start: Tue Oct 29 23:55:22 1996 *** Now talking in #TOTGM *** BabyRain sets mode: +s *** BabyRain changes topic to "Tales of the Gold Monkey: Here the Goose flies again!!!!" *** GMonkey (GMonkey@61044d0024la.concentric.net) has joined #TOTGM Howdy! *** Volterra (danswler@sdts3-48.znet.com) has joined #totgm hey! Hi, Leanne! I just did a who and couldn't see anyone ... how long have you guys been here? oh, you're marked "S" for secret :) I just got here literally 30 seconds ago. Hi Patricia, Hi BabyRain! BabyRain is Karen, but I don't know where she is. Ah. Well, we *are* early. :) Well, I emailed one other friend about it, but I don't know if she'll get the message in time or not true :) couldn't wait :) I got your email. Thanks! no probs! So how's the job search going? it's going ... I had an interview today that looks promising Where and what for? Yes, I'm nosy. down in Chula Vista (community south of San Diego) as a software programmer. that's my job. Say, what's yours? (two can be nosey!) Oooo, sounds like big bucks! well, not necessarily. So long as it's bucks :) I'm a support analyst. Basically I'm a number cruncher. do they taste good? * Volterra grins When you add a pinch of salt. salt works wonders doesn't it? That and ketchup! :) oh, I have to confess (before anyone else gets here) that I haven't started typing yet. That's okay. It's slow going for me too. *** BabyRain sets mode: +o GMonkey *** BabyRain sets mode: +o Volterra but they're sitting on pf y computer. Hi, Karen! Where you been. let me translate: top of my computer hi and thanks Karen! It looks like it's just going to be the 3 of us. Lesley can't make it. I was editting some home pages and hhad the IRC client minimized. It was supposed to beep when you got here, but I had the volume turned down. :) well, that'll work *grin* Likely story! * BabyRain gets indignant, then decides she doesn't have the energy. Do you think anyone else will come? Have another diet pepsi. That'll pick you up! * Volterra has actually done that before. Only the sound wasn't turned down. It just didn't beep. Oh! It's on the coffee table. Hang on! I emailed many of the regulars but only Leanne replied. * GMonkey pats Leanne on the head * Volterra rolls over and begs for a tummy scratch *grin* Don't push your luck, missy! :) well, #warlow started off slow too ... in fact, after three months it's still slow! It's not the quantity, it's the quality. uh huh Well, it sounded good to me. sounds good to me too. A lady of Quality I is and make no mistake! Hey, do you think we should move on to the topic at hand? must we? * Volterra ducks MONKEY! MONKEY! TALK THE MONKEY!!!! -> [GMonkey] PING -> [Volterra] PING I'm having SERIOUS doubts about this! Why? naahh ... not you :) Just kidding. Now on with the show... you know the ep I remember most? Could it be 'Trunk From the Past'? (and I havent looked up the ep guide yet) well, I meant from original viewiings ... YOU DON'T HAVE IT MEMORIZED!!! OUT!!!1 it's the one where Sarah's college buddy, Whitney comes to Boragora * Volterra pouts and crawls into the corner. 'Naka Jima Kill' * GMonkey shows off her abundant semi-useless knowledge I have that one memorized, too, mainly because it's the one I still have on audio tape. No ... I don't have it memorised. When I have the eps I'll make an effort. I need images and sound to remember titles, and sometimes not even then. Karen: me too! Well, the opening and closing credits anyway Do you guys want tapes? My favourite line: "We had some peanut butter sandwiches on the way over." I think I might have tapes coming. Peanut butter and banana. :) Poor Corky. Good for you, Karen. How about you, Leanne. "Whitney for once will you shut up!" "It's a warrior's code. Once his sword completely leaves it's sheath ..." um something :) Was it just me or did you know that Prudy was a guy immediately? Well, call me picky -- but I want good quality copies * GMonkey calls Leanne picky. Hopefully, Tom Greene will send me his tapes soon. Other than that I've one reasonable copy of "Trunk from the Past" Leanne: "It's a warrior code -- once his sword completely leaves its sheath, it has to taste blood." thanks Karen :) Oooo, impressive. * BabyRain takes a bow I may have to start digging out the scripts just for reference purposes. the other quote from the opening credits is: "Jake! Look ou!" *ruff* out even Well, you two "foreigners" will appreciate, "Why are Americans so twitchy?" I thought It was "Jack! Look out!" :) I see someone else has the "preview" for that ep memorized, too. :) :P Leanne, you're a foreigner too? hey, it was all I had, what else was there to memorise? Aussie born and bred -- bu married American but even heck, that t key Canadian, Karen? My hands are freezing, so any typos are a direct result of this fact. Yeah, I'm Canadian, eh? :) I wish I had that excuse :) Well, I'm just plain ol' American. Sigh. * Volterra grins Pat: well, so was Jake :) Yeah! * GMonkey sighs dreamily. * Volterra sighs dreamily also BabyRain? Yo. No dream sigh from you? he was so cute on 7th Heaven last night -- SC that is, not JC Don't rub it in. Poor Canadian Karen can't see the show. You know that line in the ep with Faye Grant? Something about "Please hold me. I feel like I might fall and break into little pieces"? That line *works* on guys. :) oh, oops. (mutter mutter) You know this from experience? hmm, I might try that on hubby tonight ... does one do it teary-eyed? Absolutely. :) hey, TOTGM is educational too! On the brink of tears, but not quite there. Was there any doubt to it's educational value? Patricia, did you know that you started BB#2 on my wedding day? I just thought I'd ppoint that out. Maybe I'll mention that on the board tomorrow. Oh, I fully expect you to. :) :) :) * GMonkey is making a mental note Did you like my 12-year-old Ba-DUM aty the end of the theme where it got cut off? hmm, so is this being logged for the board tomorrow? *grin* Actually, I *am* logging. :) Yes, it's great. I've uploaded the file but it's huge. I'm not sure if I should include a link in the site. It's about 2 megs, right? 1.3 I think. But that's mighty big. *** BillPrest (BillPresto@65-136.client.gnn.com) has joined #totgm Bill! I've dled files that size before. Hello everybody. Is this thing on? BILL! Hi, Bill! What's shaking? * BabyRain wonders if she's met Bill, but will do the welcome thing anyway ... I have too ... just make sure the size is visible -- so then people can choose to download or not Karen, Bill. Bill, Karen. Hi, Bill. * Volterra checks Bill's mike. Looks fine to me * BabyRain extends her right hand. * Volterra introduces herself. I'm Leanne I'll put in a link tomorrow. I promise. Hiya goils! What's going on? Leanne, Bill. Bill, Leanne. Hi Karen. Greetings from Colorado. Pat: oh and warn 'em it'll take a while The usual Monkey chat stuff. Hi Volterra, Hi Baby Rain. Do I know you folks? Aiee! Don't bill me yet. (boom boom) After all the trouble we went through to get it to you, you'd better. :) I saved that tape just for you, you know. All those years, I kept saying to myself, someday I'll meet Patricia, and ... I don't know if you know me or not. I have my *mother* laughing in the background of my tape Okay, okay. I'll link and warn! GMonkey: Is that you, Patricia? don't think so Bill but you're a Monkiac so that's cool, right! Yep. Don't you remember my new e-mail address? I had a whale of a time finding this place. It turned out to be much easier than I thought. Well, I know everybody. That's all that matters. :) What are we talking about? Actually, something very weird happened on my tape. At the beginning of the tape, before I taped the show, I taped my godfather snoring and singing. When I listened to the tape a couple of weeks ago, I was stunned. My godfather died over three years ago, now. It was really special to find I still had part of him left. Karen: wow ... Bill: tapes versions of TOTGM that we have at present taped even. I'm not typng well this arv Tell 'em what you got, Bill. Yeah. That's what I thought. My husband couldn't imagine 1) what I was listening to and 2) why I was bawling my eyes out. What have you got, Bill? * Volterra hugs Karen Thanks to my good buddy Patricia, I have every tape of TOTGM. And a bunch of USA Network commercials as well. * BabyRain hugs Leanne back. Every single show? WOW! Lucky Bill ... But of course they're not high quality. Except the two hour spliced together weird re-do movie. * GMonkey smirks at Leanne. True. But any old port in a storm. * Volterra pokes her tongue out at Patricia Oooo, Bill, do you want that? I've got it. I don't need it, do I? Not really, but it's unintentionally hilarious. I say we have a convention. those kind of movies often are That's okay. Thanks for the offer though. was that a request, Karen??? The offer will remain open to anyone. I think so. does anyone else here have (or did see) Putting It Together on Broadway? Nope No. I can't find the CD anywhere. * GMonkey pouts. * BabyRain feels strange that the only place she's been in the US is Bangor, ME. Patricia: why didn't you say so? I'll tape it for you. What exactly is "Putting It Together on Broadway?" Show tunes? If you do, are you sure you don't want some TOTGM tapes in return? re: the convention: we could go to LA (bleh) and go on the set and have dinner with the cast or something ... Leanne, O Musical Maven, explain PIT please. "Putting It Together" is a Sondheim review SC is in the cast. Patricia: you could twist my arm on that - OW! You mean Stephen Sondheim, the musical fella? and Julie Andrews yup But Julie was never on TOTGM! Julie Andrews? My daughter has a book of hers, writing as Julie Edwards. it's songs from previous musicals stuck loosely together to form a new one. Julie and Stephen play hubby and wife. Pat: yeah but a) she's brilliant and b) she's a name people know She's a bit older than him, n'cest pas? Oh, oh, Bill, you're gonna get it. Not that it matters. well ... yes .... -- and nice recovery :) Nice save, Bill. A thousand pardons for an unkind remark. But she looks great. Can Stephen sing? I mean, other than little fishies over the dam sort of thing. and she sounds great too -- I mean she had flu when she recorded the cd and still sounded good! yes, he can. not amazingly so -- but pleasantly He's just so multi-talented. * GMonkey sighs dreamily yet again. I love the fishies song. Have you memorized it yet? Hey, back to the basics. We watched "Black Pearl" last night, and my wife came up with the opinion that Jack is always cranky because nobody ever pets him. Whattya think? He was petted in "Ape Boy" by the ape boy -- he really liked it. I think he's just old and cranky. I like that! and he's still sore at Jake for losing his eye, of course I think the fact that Jake lost his eye had something to do with it. Oooh! In stereo almost I can relate to the old & cranky part sometimes. How 'bout 'middle aged & cranky'? I was surprised that they mention in the bible that Jack will never get his eye back. gmta, Karen! Are you talking about Jack or you, Bill? :) do I hear young-aged and mildly irriated? But hear me out here. Jake & Corky never pet him. He's their dog. Buffy the wonder Lab would be very put out if I never petted her. irritated dang Those darn Ts again. I'm too fast for my keyboard Bill, I certainly think it's a factor! Well, they just treated him as one of the guys. You wouldn't expect Jake to pet Corky, would you? Umm...I mean... :) * Volterra is *not* going there I emailed Jeff Mackay one time, asking when Leo (Jack) died, and he didn't know. Jack was a huge part of that show, you know. He was always my fave. He always got to say exactly what he thought. uh huh. TotGM was very much an ensemble show ... *everyone* was important. And he was trilingual! And if you noticed in one of the episodes, he was an espresso drinker, years before it became a fad. He was one hep cat, rather one hep dog. Volterra is right, though. It definitely was composed of many elements, all of them important. ABC are such idiots, aren't they? That's what made the show great, the many facets. I prefer to call them "weenies"! An apt description. I've been calling *everyone* weenies for the past week. NOW I know where I got it. :) nah, why mince words? brb lol! Would you prefer "chuckleheads"? how about "brain-drained numskulls who couldn't write a decent sentence to save themselves let alone figure out what creative is and isn't!" * Volterra isn't bitter. Much. Hey, we haven't even touched the proposed topic. * GMonkey IS BITTER! I mourn the fact that TOTGM lasted one year. If it had gone 2 years, we'd have 42 episodes on tape. I still feel bad for the lady at ATV who broke the news to me that the show had been cancelled. Run it by me again. What is the proposed topic? I gave up cricket because that's what replaced it. "What do you think happened to the characters during the war?" BabyRain - what is ATV? (it wasn't hard to do) oh, that was the topic? Didn't anybody read my story on the board? * GMonkey sighs wearily. ATV? Atlantic Television System, a subsidiary of CTV (Canadian Television). I read your story. Sarah worked for the French Resistance alongside Louie who she married because Jake up and left to enlist Thank you, Karen. sorry, Pat, I only visit every coupla days Jake & Corky - were coastwatchers in the Solomon Islands until 1943, at which time Jake joined the Marine Corps and flew with Pappy Boyington and Joe Foss, flying Chance Vought Corsairs. Good one, Leanne! :) * Volterra feels real bad I'm still getting a mental picture of Louie and Sarah married. Tres weird! Corky was a Marine mechanic, of course, and got married after the war. His most famous son was actor Kevin Corcoran, or Moochie as we know him best. Jake ran off to Eastern Canada and is now my next-door neighbour. Nice try, Karen. :) I borrowed his pruning shears yesterday. Honest! :) well, you never know Todo joined the Imperial Japanese Navy, and died at the battle of Midway. Oh, she just wants Jake all to herself. But would Todo ever leave Koji, even for Japan? Jake had a brief stint in the battle over the Channel and when Paris was liberated he bumps into Sarah and they have a Casablanca lik meeting and separation Willie died at Stalingrad, a dejected, disillusioned prisoner of war (as we found out from the TOTGM bible) Lesley is still VERY upset over Willie's passing. Koji, let's see, what happened to Koji? Oh yeah, she returned to the Japanese Mainland to avoid the conflict. That's when Todo enlisted. In her story, Willie trades dog tags with a dead soldier and assumes his identity. Yeah, why'd they give WIllie an ending and no-one else? To make the writers treat him better? Did I miss Lesley's story somehow? Lesley wrote a story? No. I haven't posted it yet. It's not really a story, just a bunch of ideas. I was hoping she could join us to talk about it, but her car died. A moment of silence please. After the war, Jake returns to the US, and ends up in New York, where he runs into Soc McGinnis and Harry Johnson, and the 3 of them form Eagle Cargo Company. who're McGinnis and Johnson? Corky & Harry are the mechanics, Jake & Soc are the pilots. They fly C-47s & C-4s from Helena, Montana. Volterra, you'll have to read "Last Flight of the Eagle" to know about Soc & Harry. Bill: oh. Where would I find that? Did I say C-4s? I meant C-54s. Volterra - unfortunately you won't. I have the only copy. you wrote it? Cool! Some would call it writing. Others would call it typing. You typed it? Cool! * Volterra laughs * GMonkey is being a smartass again I could always type up and upload the fan fict I wrote when I was 12. It would be good for a laugh or two. I stole that quote from Truman Capote. About the only thing I'll ever steal from him. unless you find another suitable quote :) Baby - TOTGM fanfict? Filthy plagiarist! But we like you anyway, Bill. I paraphrased, okay? I kinda wrote a musical loosely based around brideshead revisted and umm totgm ... Leanne: Combined?! *** Volterra changes topic to "Tales of the Gold Monkey: True Confessions onf the Monkiacs" So Jake & Soc & Harry & Corky end up running guns to the Israelis in 1948, something that Soc & Harry have a little experience in, ala "Last Flight of the Eagle", the aforementioned work. BTW, Karen, I'd love your fanfic. Well, more sequential really ... and I stole *all* the music (I do that with my musicals) yeah Karen, type it up Karen - si! Okay, but I'll leave it "as is" for historical value. :) It's unanimous! I'll vote twice to make it really unanimous! Maybe once I get some tapes and watch the show again, I'll write some better stuff. cool :) Just put in an author's note. "I was young. Sue me!" Okay. :) * Volterra wants to write some ToTGM fic too ... There's excitement in the air in Colorado, over Karen's stuff! Hopefully soon (a few months from now), we'll be staring an online zine, Cutters Goose 3. well, not "Sue me!" 'cause someone will, I'm sure. People are so suggestive :) Volterra - go for it. I'll have to find them. Oh, I'll need another disclaimer as well. I thought Sarah's last name was Stickney-White, so whjen I introduced her younger sister, she had the last name of Stickney-White. you mean a *sequel* to #! and #2 Yes. Does anybody do illustration? Yes sequel, or yes illustration? Not me. I'm limited to the literary arts. * Volterra will *definitely* get started then. I hope to have the first two issues transcribed and uploaded in a month or two. Yes, sequel. You have the first two issues, Leanne. I won't shave until I read Volterra's fanfict, or tomorrow morning, whichever comes first. I'm a woman of many words, but no pictures. I know, for a moment I thought there'd been another. Bill: haven't I heard that somewhere before? ;) I gotta brother who's aa decent cartoonist. Patricia, I've told you about him. He's hard to motivate. * Volterra can't draw either. SOmeone out there could though. Not yet. Marilyn Victor wants to edit a new issue. Sounds like my brother, except for the artistic part. :) Marilyn Victor nee Johansen? Egads! Look at the time! almost 5pmPST we're good gabbers :) Back to the original subject, as time wanes. Louis makes the wrong choice, sides with the Vichy French, is killed in 1942 in Algiers by a disgruntled loyalist. So, next week? Same monkey time, same monkey channel? you mean we have to go now? sniff Count me in, circumstances permitting. I'll be here, as long as I'm not there. Well, I was trying to limit the discussions to one hour so we'd have something to talk about next week. I'll be here, barring job interviews and the like Is it over? This is it? oh. Well, if you had come on time, Bill... I was woikin' will we have a set topic next week too? (not that we stick to it) Maybe, next week we'll have 20 people here. Nah. Let's play it by ear. Well listen, you guys are wonderful. It's an honor and a privilege to know you, and a grand time chattin' with yuz. well, my ears don't type much better than my fingers, but I can try that, if you want ... Do you want me to send you the log for the site, GM? see you next week, Bill! * GMonkey slaps Volterra around a bit with a large trout * BabyRain slaps GMonkey around a bit with a large trout Bye, Bill! * Volterra will go brainstorm her fic .. Sounds great! Just stop slapping me! ooh! I got trout-slapped! I've made it! Bye Volterra. You're way too swell for your own good. Bye bye Baby, bye bye. Well, sleep tight. Don't let the bedbugs bite. sounds like another quote bill, see you later, Bill! * Volterra will visit site too :) Don't let Louis hear you say that! ta ta all. Bye!
