			_ACT ONE_

FADE IN

EXTERIOR TROPICAL STORM - NIGHT

With a report as sharp as the crack of doom, a white-hot bolt of lightning
tears from the storm clouds and plunges into the raging sea. The crack is
followed by a deep rumble that eventually dies away, to be replaced by a
low, moaning chant. We slowly pan towards the source of the chanting to
reveal the silhouette of....

A SUBMARINE

riding serenely upon the calm waters of a deep lagoon as the storm churns
the sea beyond the reef. The submarine has a strange bulbous bow, which
separates before our eyes. We continue to pan, following this strange
silhouette towards....

A CAVE

it's interior lit by torches. The moaning chant is coming from somewhere
deep inside.

ON TUTSAMI NATIVES

their dark skin glistening in the torchlight as, shackled one to the
other, they draw the ominous object across the lagoon towards the mouth of
the cave. Each Tutsami pulls the hawser along the catwalk to the back of
the cave, where he releases his grip and runs back to the start of the
catwalk to grasp the hawser again and repeat the laborious process. They
are being driven on by black-uniformed SS guards with polished boots and
leather riding crops.

CLOSE ON OBSERVATION PLATFORM

set above the catwalks at the mouth of the cave. Here, three Germans
observe the work. The first, dressed in tropical mufti, is Otto
Wolfschmidt...a rapier-thin man of fifty in superb physical condition. He
carries a dueling scar on his left cheek and has the whitewall haircut of
a Prussian officer. The second is Obersturmfuhrer Herman Kreiss...a
German SS officer with a tendency towards paunchiness and a mind that
would put the Marquis de Sade to shame. The third, wearing a turtleneck
sweater even in the tropics, is the U-boat commander...a young seawolf who
looks with disdain upon the other two.

			GERMAN CAPTAIN
This is insane. Torches when we have lights? And why not rig a
	winch...a donkey engine...something other that...than....

			HERMAN
		(finishing for him)
	Slave labor?

			GERMAN CAPTAIN
	Jah.

			OTTO
		(laughs)
You have no sense of the dramatic, Captain. The Great Wall of
China...the Pyramid of Cheops...the Tower of Babylon...They were all
	built by slave labor.

CLOSE ON THE TUTSAMIS

as they struggle to pull the object across the lagoon.

			OTTO'S VOICE
		(continuing)
Since the dawn of time man has advanced upon his own sweat. So
	shall the Third Reich.

CLOSE ON THE THREE GERMANS

The Captain looks at Otto, calm and cool in his white suit.

			GERMAN CAPTAIN
I don't see you sweating, Herr Doctor.

			OTTO
		(smiles)
We each sweat in our own way.

			GERMAN CAPTAIN
	And when they are done?

			HERMAN
I have some...experiments to conduct with them.

The Captain stares at the little SS officer in disgust, then turns and
looks off camera to the huge black orb, which at this moment is towed
through frame, wiping the scene.

EXTERIOR GERMAN ISLAND ENCAMPMENT - NIGHT - CLOSE ON MADA

a handsome Tutsami native who has escaped his shackles. He is crouching,
behind a stack of five-gallon fuel drums, beneath the huge camouflage net
that conceals the German encampment on the island. After a SS guard, with
a sub-machine gun over his shoulder, strolls past, Mada creeps into one of
the tents.

INTERIOR OTTO'S TENT

It is simply furnished...a cot, writing desk and trunk. Atop the trunk,
wrapped in cloth are a number of fencing swords. Mada slips past the
trunk to a small steel vault in the corner.

CLOSE ON THE VAULT

"DANGER," in German, is painted on the door and beneath it a white skull
and crossbones. Mada opens the door to reveal a highly polished cylinder
the size of a thermos bottle snuggled into a wooden rack.

CLOSE ON MADA

as his eyes widen in awe.

			MADA
		(to himself)
	Esnandee!

He slowly reaches into the vault (below camera) and reverently removes the
cylinder. Then he closes the door into camera and we....

					CUT TO

EXTERIOR TROPICAL STORM - NIGHT

It is closer than before. Once again, we pan from the storm to the
silhouette of the submarine, this time widening until we reveal the far
shore of the lagoon in the foreground where four more escaped Tutsami
natives wait in the jungle beside a hidden outrigger canoe. They don't
have to wait long, Mada soon appears, swimming with the strong strokes of
a South Seas islander. He holds up the cylinder and his brothers ooh and
aah. Then they silently push the canoe into the lagoon, mount it and
paddle towards the opening in the reef. It begins to rain.

ON THE OUTRIGGER CANOE

as they escape through the reef into the open sea. The swells are
enormous, but these men are born to the sea and the canoe is in no danger.

ANGLE ON MADA

The rain pelting down on his head as he holds the cylinder up to the gods
of the storm.

			MADA
		(shouting)
	Esnandee!

The others take up the cry...repeating it over and over until it becomes
the chant they row by. Mada then lowers the canister and slowly unscrews
the polished steel cap. As the end comes off, a blue-green glow is
emitted from inside.

CLOSE ON MADA'S FACE

lit by the glow as he looks inside the cylinder and beholds the power of
the gods.

					DISSOLVE TO

EXTERIOR SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN - DAY - TROPICAL STORM

Through the dark, billowing storm clouds we get an occasional glimpse of
the Goose as it's illuminated by a flash of lightning.

			JAKE'S VOICE
They say Pacific means 'calm' in Spanish, but you couldn't prove it
	by me....

					CUT TO

INTERIOR GOOSE - DAY

Jake at the controls, unlit cigar clamped in his jaw, Corky beside him.
The Goose shakes and rattle violently.

			JAKE'S VOICE
They also say money talks. I don't always like what it has to say,
but I usually listen. Have to in this business....

ANGLE ON JACK

glued to the spot normally reserved for take-offs and landings.

			JAKE'S VOICE
This time it was a hundred bucks, telling me all I had to do was fly
an American named Kimble from Tagataya to Boragora....

ANGLE ON JOHNNY KIMBLE

Strapped into one of the passenger seats, pale and unnerved, surrounded by
cargo is Johnny Kimble, early forties, good looking, a slightly roguish
affectation about him when he's not in fear for his life. He has a small
dueling scar on his left cheek.

			JAKE'S VOICE
He seemed like an all right kind of guy, which in this part of the
world usually means just the opposite....

			KIMBLE
		(shouts forward)
	Does lightning ever hit airplanes?

ANGLE ON JAKE AND CORKY

			JAKE
		(calls back)
	Never twice.

He winks at Corky. More thunder and lightning, rain hitting the
windshield like tiny hammers.

			CORKY
		(correcting him)
That ain't so, Jake. Remember that time in '34 when we were flying
	those llamas from Lima to...ah...to....

			JAKE
		(after a pause)
	La Paz.

			CORKY
		(brightly)
La Paz! We were hit twice by lightning in the same day.
		(yells back)
	Ain't that right, Jack?

CLOSE ON JACK

He lifts his head and barks twice.

BACK ON JAKE AND CORKY

As if to punctuate Corky's point, another searing bolt of lightning splits
the sky. The Goose bumps violently and Jake has to fight the controls to
keep it from falling out of the sky.

			JAKE
	That's it!
		(beat)
	I'm gonna start flying legs.

			KIMBLE'S VOICE
	What're 'legs'?

Out of his seat, Kimble appears in the opening behind him.

			CORKY
You'd better stay in your seat, mister.

			KIMBLE
I get nervous when people make life-or-death decisions I can't hear.
Especially people who talk to dogs.
		(to Jake)
	What're 'legs'?

			JAKE
Instead of flying on course, which happens to be right down the
gullet of the storm, we angle off -- first to port side, then
starboard, then back again. Kind of like a zig zag.

			KIMBLE
	For how long?

			JAKE
	Until something breaks.

			KIMBLE
	Until _what_ breaks?

			JAKE
		(smiles)
	The weather.

A huge bolt of lightning cracks close down to cause all three to jump.

					SMASH CUT TO

INTERIOR SARAH'S ROOM - DAY - CLOSE ON SARAH

as she jerks the headset away from her ears for a second as the static
from the storm almost punctures her eardrums.

WIDER

Sarah is wearing a wearing a white silk kimono and deciphering the message
coming in over her radio.

			SARAH
		(writing)
	Defecting American scientist...Doctor John Kimble...rendezvousing
	with Germans...Boragora...oh eight hundred...tomorrow...Important
	you...

Another sputter of static causes her to jerk the headset away from her
ears. As it dies down, she picks up the end of the message.

			SARAH
		(writing)
	...German experiment.
		(sending)
	Manila...repeat. Message incomplete. Manila...repeat.

She frantically tunes the radio, but it's hopeless. All she can pick up
is static.

			SARAH
	Terrific.

She re-tunes and transmitter and begins sending.

					CUT TO

EXTERIOR STORMY SEA - DAY - ON DESTROYER HANCOCK - STOCK

as it plows through the heavy seas.

INTERIOR HANCOCK RADIO ROOM - DAY

The room is pitching and tossing with the waves, but it doesn't bother
Sparks who rolls with it as he works. The hatch opens and it seems like
half the Pacific splashes inside before the captain, in foul weather gear,
can enter and dog it shut. He slides his hood back and Sparks hands him a
message.

			SPARKS
It's White on Boragora. She's received this partial message from
Intelligence in Manila. Wants to know what to do.

			U.S. CAPTAIN
		(reading)
	Did you call Manila?

			SPARKS
Can't get through...the storm's moving between us and the
	Philippines.

			U.S. CAPTAIN
		(nods)
Tell her to...stop this Kimble if possible. We'll stand by to
assist if necessary. And let me know as soon as you can raise
	Manila.

			SPARKS
	Aye, aye, sir.

Sparks turns back to his set. As the captain opens the door to the
sea....

					CUT TO

EXTERIOR GOOSE - DAY

as it fights through the storm. The clouds seem somewhat lighter than
when we left it.

INTERIOR COCKPIT - ACROSS JAKE AND CORKY

as they peer through the driving rain pelting the window.

			JAKE
		(hopeful)
	I think it's easing up.

			CORKY
		(points)
	Jake! Over there...blue.

			JAKE
		(looking)
	Atta boy, Corky.

Corky smiles, pleased at his discovery as Jake banks the Goose towards the
hole in the clouds.

EXTERIOR ON THE GOOSE

as she drops out of the storm and levels out a couple of hundred feet
above the ocean.

INTERIOR GOOSE COCKPIT

For the first time in hours, the pressure is off.

			CORKY
		(taking the yoke)
Can I spell you for a while, Jake?

Jake studies the sky ahead and nods, relinquishing the controls to Corky.
As Jake lights his cigar, Jack trots up between them.

			JAKE
Decided it was safe enough to join us, huh?

Jack barks twice.

			CORKY
		(flying)
You know, Jake, I can't wait to see the look on Sarah's face when
	you give her that present.

Jake smiles and reaches under the seat to pat the package he's stored
there. As he does, he spots something ahead and his smile fades.

			JAKE
		(taking the controls)
	I got her, Corky,

			CORKY
		(hurt)
	I was doing okay, Jake.

			JAKE
		(peering ahead)
You see something in the water...about ten o'clock?

			CORKY
		(looking)
	Just waves...
		(spots it)
Jake! An outrigger. Boy, you gotta give the islanders credit.
	They can...
		(eyes widening)
	Jake...something's wrong with 'em.

EXTERIOR ON THE OUTRIGGER

as it rises and falls on the swells. The Tutsamis who escaped in the
night are draped over the gunnels, some with their heads and arms under
water. The Goose roars over, ten feet above them.

INTERIOR GOOSE COCKPIT

Jake looks back over his shoulder as he pulls the Goose up and around in a
climbing turn. Corky is staring at him.

			CORKY
	Jake. They're all dead!

			KIMBLE
		(yells)
	One of them's alive!

			JAKE
	I saw him.
		(to Corky)
	Whatta you think?

Corky looks down at the ocean.

			CORKY
Fifty-fifty chance we'll tip over in these seas, Jake.

Jack gets up and heads for the rear.

ANGLE ON KIMBLE

as he watches Jack trot past to his nest in the back of the Goose. Kimble
turns towards Jake and Corky.

			KIMBLE
	You're not going to land!

ON THE GOOSE

as she comes in across the swells.

			KIMBLE'S VOICE
	You guys are nuts!

The Goose touches down, leaving a huge plume of spray and disappears
behind a swell.

INTERIOR GOOSE COCKPIT

as Jake manipulates the throttles...powering from one engine to the other
to keep the Goose from tipping over in the heavy seas. Finally, they
settle down to a more reasonable attitude and Jake releases the controls
to Corky.

			JAKE
		(getting up)
Taxi as close as you can. I'll try to get a line to him.

			CORKY
		(concentrating)
	Gotcha.

MOVING WITH JAKE

as he gathers rope from the rear compartment, then throws open the hatch.
Kimble is behind him through this.

			KIMBLE
	You coulda killed us!

			JAKE
	Don't worry, Kimble...Corky still might.

Corky pours on the throttle as the Goose slides up and down on a swell.
Kimble looks a little green.

CLOSE ON THE OUTRIGGER

Mada is at the helm. He looks terrible, his skin is blistered and
blotched...he's barely alive. As Corky maneuvers the Goose as close as
possible, Mada manages a feeble wave. Jake tosses the weighted end of the
rope to Mada, but he's too weak to grasp it.

INSIDE THE GOOSE - FEATURE JAKE

as he sits and pulls off his boots.

			JAKE
		(yells to Corky)
	Hold her there!
		(to Kimble)
I'm gonna swim out with the line, he's too weak to grab it.

ON JACK

He is watching something through the hatch. He growls.

ON THE OUTRIGGER

Suddenly, one of the Tutsamis hanging over the side is jerked into the
water, disappearing in a splash.

BACK INSIDE THE GOOSE

Jake strips off his leather flying jacket and ties a rope around his
waist. Jack stands in the hatch next to Kimble, growling.

			JAKE
	What's wrong?

			KIMBLE
		(looking out)
	Sharks.

ON THE OUTRIGGER

A fin cuts through the water in the foreground, then another and another.
Mada clutches the canister to his chest, his eyes wide with fear. Another
dead native is jerked into the sea with a splash.

INTERIOR THE HATCH - FEATURE JAKE

as he stares out at the sharks feeding in a frenzy around the outrigger.

			KIMBLE
	You're not that nuts...are you?

Jack barks twice. Jake knifes into the water.

UNDERWATER - ON SHARKS - STOCK

as they tear at the Tutsami bodies.

ON JAKE

swimming with strong strokes towards the outrigger.

INSIDE THE COCKPIT - ON CORKY

gunning the engine and watching.

			CORKY
		(only prayer he knows)
Now I lay me down to sleep....

UNDERWATER - ON A SHARK - STOCK

as it turns and takes off towards Jake.

ON JACK

watching the shark go after Jake. He growls and looks ready to jump into
the water after it.

MOVING WITH JAKE

as he swims up to the outrigger and pulls himself on board. The dead
Tutsami hanging over the gunnel beside him disappears with a splash as
Jake falls into the bottom of the canoe and gasps for air.

GOOSE COCKPIT - ON CORKY

He finishes the prayer with a smile of relief.

			CORKY
...I pray the Lord my soul to take.
		(looks heavenward)
	Thank you.

REAR HATCH

Kimble pulls on the rope line until the outrigger is against the side of
the Goose. Then, he drags Mada inside. Jake climbs in, pushes the
outrigger off and closes the hatch.

			KIMBLE
	Who is he?

			JAKE
	Tutsami from the headband.
		(beat)
He's in bad shape...we've gotta get him to Louie as quick as we can.

Jake moves forward and Kimble rolls Mada over, supporting him. He sees
the canister clutched in Mada's hand and reaches for it, but somehow Mada
hangs on.

			MADA
		(weakly)
	Esnandee.

ACROSS MADA TO KIMBLE

His eyes widen -- whatever Mada said Kimble understood it. He reaches
again for the canister, this time managing to take it from Mada who passes
out. Kimble turns the canister over slowly, starts to unscrew it, then
changes his mind. He moves to slip it into his pocket, but at that moment
Jake guns the engines to take off and the slippery canister slides out of
his hands as he grabs onto a seat for balance. The canister rolls along
the aisle to....

CORKY

who is working his way back from the cockpit. He picks up the canister
and looks at it. Jack growls. Corky looks at Jack, then slips the
canister into his side pocket and continues up the aisle to Kimble and
Mada.

			CORKY
		(to Kimble)
Jake sent me back to help.
		(looks at Mada)
Poor guy. Whatta ya think happened to him?

We move in on Kimble's face as he eyes the canister in Corky's pocket.

			KIMBLE
	I...I wouldn't know.

			_ACT TWO_

FADE IN

INTERIOR MONKEY BAR - NIGHT

It's a slow night without the Clipper in Boragora, where the mood inside
matches the tropical rain sleeting down outside; a few locals playing
billiards, one or two serious drinkers. Gushie kibitzing as Louie plays a
game of solitaire, even the flies buzzing a little softer. Sarah is
standing beside the piano with sheet music rehearsing "Am I Blue," singing
more to herself than anyone in the bar. As she nears the finish of the
song....

ON THE SWINGING DOORS

Corky throws them open and Jake and Kimble carry Mada inside. All of them
are soaking wet from the rain.

			JAKE
	Louie! Where....

			LOUIE
		(looks around)
	The billiard table.

INTERIOR BILLIARD ROOM

Corky sweeps in, leading everyone else, and clears the billiard table just
as one of the players is about to make a shot.

			CORKY
	Gangway!

Jake and Kimble lay Mada on the green chaise...the Tutsami looks near
death. For the first time, the others get a good look at his blistered
body and swollen lips. They begin to edge back.

			JAKE
	Somebody get the preacher!

About half the crowd volunteers.

			LOUIE
		(examining him)
	Tutsami?

			JAKE
	Looks like it.

ANGLE ON SARAH

Kimble is standing behind her and looking her over.

			SARAH
	Where'd you find him?

			KIMBLE
In the middle of the ocean, honey.

She turns, giving him a dirty look...she doesn't like being called
"Honey." He just smiles and extends his hand.

			KIMBLE
John Kimble. But you can call me Johnny.

Sarah starts to turn away, then the name registers. She puts on a small
smile and shakes his hand.

			SARAH
	Sarah.

ANOTHER ANGLE - FEATURE JAKE AND LOUIE

Jake catches the moment between Kimble and Sarah. He doesn't like it.

			LOUIE
	He's dead, Jake.

The crowd begins to murmur in the background. As Corky gets the billiard
table cover and pulls it over the body....

			LOCAL
	Plague. He's got the plague!

Everyone begins to panic.

			LOUIE
		(loudly; in French)
	Stop it!
		(in English)
	Who says it was plague?
		(lifts cover)
Looks like exposure to the sun and salt water.
		(to Jake)
	Where did you find him?

			JAKE
		(after a beat)
	Open ocean.

			LOUIE
		(to crowd)
	You see.
		(beat)
Now, everyone to the Monkey Bar. The drinks are on....

			GUSHIE
		(interrupting)
	Are half price!

			LOUIE
		(recovers)
	...the drinks are half price.

Gushie winks to Louie and herds the crowd out, closing the doors.

			CORKY
		(licking his lips)
	Ah...Jake....

			JAKE
Sure, Corky. Go get a beer.

ANOTHER ANGLE - FEATURE KIMBLE

as he watches Corky exit.

			KIMBLE
	I think I'll get a drink, too.

Sarah expects Kimble to ask her to join him, but he doesn't. She's
surprised and disappointed, a reaction that isn't lost on Jake.

ON THE REVEREND TENBOOM

as he enters, shaking the water from his hat. Jack growls as usual.

			WILLIE
I came as soon as I heard. I was in the middle of blessing a
	little...
		(recovers)
...ah, this is the poor soul.

			JAKE
Afraid that's all he is now, Reverend.

Willie lifts the corner of the cover and registers surprise.

			WILLIE
	Tutsami!

			LOUIE
	Oui.

			JAKE
		(catches reaction)
	What is it?

			WILLIE
		(covering)
They were my first converts in the islands.
		(beat)
	Where did you find him?

			JAKE
Don't know exactly, we flying legs in a storm. Somewhere between
	Tagataya and the Tutsami Islands.

			LOUIE
What do you think he died of?

			SARAH
		(surprised)
	You said it was exposure.

			LOUIE
I would say anything to avoid a panic.

			JAKE
	It could be the plague.

			LOUIE
		(sighs)
Oui. It could. We'll have to burn the body.
		(nods toward bar)
	And without them knowing it.

			JAKE
	Reverend?

			WILLIE
	Of course.

			LOUIE
There's petrol for the generator behind the storehouse. I'll get it
and join you at the dock. I've an old boat I've wanted to get rid
	of anyway.

			WILLIE
A Viking funeral...jah. That would be good.

			SARAH
I wish there was something I could do.

			JAKE
There is. Keep everyone in the bar.

			SARAH
	How?

			JAKE
		(smiles)
	Don't sing.

She hits him.

INTERIOR MONKEY BAR - CLOSE ON CANISTER

Its lid is slowly being unscrewed. Just as it's about to come off,
another hand grabs the one unscrewing the lid and stops it. We widen to
reveal Corky and Kimble at a table. Corky is unscrewing the lid and
Kimble is the one who has stopped him.

			KIMBLE
		(edge to voice)
	How about another beer?

			CORKY
I dunno. I've already had my limit.

			KIMBLE
	What limit?

			CORKY
Jake only lets me have two.
		(looks to canister)
I guess I ought to give this to Louie.

Jack barks twice. Corky and Kimble look down.

ON JACK

sitting beside Corky.

			CORKY
	Hiya, Jack.

Jack looks to Kimble and growls.

BACK ON BOTH

as Kimble shakes his head.

			KIMBLE
I don't think he likes me.

			CORKY
He just doesn't know you, that's all.

At that moment, Jake and Willie carry the wrapped body out of the billiard
room, followed by Louie and Sarah. As they pass the table....

			CORKY
		(stands)
	Jake. Where we taking him?

			JAKE
To the cemetery. But the Reverend and I can do it. You stay here.

			CORKY
That's okay, Jake, I'll just come along to....

			JAKE
		(warning)
	Corky...I said stay here!

			CORKY
		(disappointed)
	Ah...sure. Sure, Jake.

As they move on out the door....

			KIMBLE
	How about the beer?

Jack barks once. Corky unconsciously screws the lid back on the canister
and slips it into his pocket.

			CORKY
Why not. It's been a rough day.

			KIMBLE
		(to Gushie)
	Two more over here!

Jack growls and trots away.

ON SARAH AND LOUIE

Sarah is watching Kimble as Louie whispers....

			LOUIE
I'm going to slip out the back.
		(beat)
	Keep them entertained.

			SARAH
		(bit hot)
Whattya what me to do, Louie, strip?

Louie smiles and kisses her hand.

			LOUIE
If you're going to do that, cherie, have the decency to wait until I
	return.

Sarah smiles.

					CUT TO

EXTERIOR GERMAN ISLAND ENCAMPMENT - NIGHT

The storm has passed and beneath the camouflage netting Tutsami natives in
chains are loading equipment onto rafts to be hauled out to the submarine.
They are in the process of de-camping. We pick up Obersturmfuhrer Kreiss
as he strides to Otto's tent and enters without announcing his presence.

INTERIOR OTTO'S TENT

The German is practicing with an epee as the Obersturmfuhrer bursts in and
almost catches the blade in the chest.

			OTTO
One should always knock before entering, Obersturmfuhrer.
		(lowering sword)
	Did you find them?

			HERMAN
No. They drowned in the storm.

			OTTO
	How do you know?

			HERMAN
No one could survive in an open boat in those seas.

			OTTO
Especially if their escape was the responsibility of one
	Obersturmfuhrer Kreiss, jah?

The Obersturmfuhrer stiffens.

			OTTO
		(relenting)
No matter. We pick up Doctor Kimble in the morning and by dawn the
next day our war, it will be over.

ANGLE FEATURING OBERSTURMFUHRER KREISS

as he moves past Otto and to the vault.

			HERMAN
Precisely. I still have enough natives for my experiments.

			OTTO
		(disgusted)
	Is that necessary?

The Obersturmfuhrer opens the door to the vault, but he is looking back at
Otto.

			HERMAN
		(smiles)
	No.

He turns and reaches into the vault. As he realizes the canister is
gone....

					CUT TO

INTERIOR MONKEY BAR - NIGHT - CLOSE ON CORKY'S POCKET

Kimble is slowly lifting the canister out of it.

			KIMBLE'S VOICE
...bull elephants in Burma, black marlin off the Kona Coast...I've
	done it all. Anybody can.

We widen as he takes the canister and slips it into his jacket pocket.
Corky is half wasted, head on his hands which are cupped over the empty
beer mug, staring off into space unaware that his pocket has been picked.

			CORKY
I've never done anything like that.

			SARAH'S VOICE
	Like what?

Kimble reacts.

ANOTHER ANGLE - FEATURE SARAH

standing beside them. She's changed into a very sexy dress. Kimble is
impressed, he also wonders if she saw him lift the canister.

			CORKY
	Hunted bull elephants in Burma.
		(thinks a moment)
Though Jake and I hunted wild boar once in...ah...ah....

			SARAH
		(after a beat)
	Louisiana.

			CORKY
	Louisiana!
		(notices Sarah)
Gee, Sarah, you never wear that dress unless the Clipper's in port.
	What's the occasion?

			SARAH
		(sits)
Can't a girl dress up for a couple of good looking guys without it
	being an occasion?

			CORKY
		(embarrassed)
	Come on.

			KIMBLE
		(looking her over)
Can I buy you a drink?

			CORKY
Sarah never drinks with the customers.

			SARAH
	There's always an exception.

Corky looks away, feeling somehow responsible. Kimble smiles at Sarah.

			KIMBLE
	What'll it be, honey?

For one brief moment Sarah reacts, then she catches herself and leans in
to Kimble with a smile.

			SARAH
		(seductively)
Whatever you think I should have.

Corky looks at Sarah...he can't believe what he's hearing.

			KIMBLE
		(softly)
	You know what?

			SARAH
	What?

			WILLIE'S VOICE
The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.

EXTERIOR BORAGORA DOCK - NIGHT

The rain is not quite as heavy as Louie, Willie and Jake stand at the end
of the dock. Louie is holding a line on a long boat with Mada's cloth-
wrapped body inside, floating a few yards away.

			WILLIE
		(continuing)
Blessed be the name of the Lord.
		(to Jake)
	I am finished.

Louie drops the rope and the boat begins to drift out. Jake lights a
torch with a match and tosses it.

ON THE TORCH

as it arcs through the air, landing in the boat. The boat immediately
bursts into flames.

CLOSE ON THE THREESOME

as they watch the funeral pyre, their faces illuminated by the flames.

			JAKE
		(looks up)
Rain's letting up. I should be able to fly to the Tutsamis in the
	morning.

			WILLIE
	Why?

			JAKE
If it's plague, maybe there's something we can do. If not....

			WILLIE
You don't think it was plague?

			JAKE
	I dunno. Maybe.
		(beat)
You know he had shackle burns on his ankles and wrists.

			LOUIE
	Slavers?

			JAKE
	I'll find out tomorrow.

			LOUIE
	Bon.

			WILLIE
		(backing away)
If you'll excuse me...it's been a long day. I think I'll retire for
the night and pray for that poor devil's soul.

		   JAKE LOUIE
	  Night, Reverend. Bon nuit.

CLOSE ON JAKE AND LOUIE

as the preacher leaves. They turn back and stare at the boat.

			JAKE
I've never been to a Viking funeral before.

			LOUIE
	I have...once.
		(beat)
In North Africa, when I was with the Legion. It happened in a fort
where all the defenders were killed...a Fort Zinderman.

Jake slowly turns and stares at Louie.

			LOUIE
		(sighs)
	Ah...but that's another story.

CLOSE ON THE LONGBOAT

as it drifts towards the reef, burning furiously.

INTERIOR CHURCH - NIGHT

as Willie enters, shaking the water from his hat. He moves quickly to the
secret panel leading to the radio room and triggers the sliding door.

INTERIOR BASEMENT RADIO ROOM - ON THE TUBES

as they glow to life. We widen to see Willie wiping the moisture from his
glasses, then he begins to send.

EXTERIOR GERMAN ISLAND ENCAMPMENT - NIGHT

Beneath the netting, Obersturmfuhrer Kreiss is standing beside a radio
operator who's sending a message over his wireless. Otto, wearing only
his pants, but carrying the epee, approaches.

			HERMAN
		(to Otto)
A Tutsami native was brought in to Boragora by an American pilot.
	He died...They think of plague.

			OTTO
Mein Gott...They must have opened the S-90!

			HERMAN
	Most likely.
		(sighs)
Unfortunately our agent on the island is a womanizing fool.

			OTTO
Who probably just saved you from a concentration camp.

			HERMAN
		(stiffly)
I am sending a description of the canister. If it is there, and
this Reverend Tenboom cannot find it, I will.

			OTTO
Did you warn him not to open it?

			HERMAN
	Nein.

			OTTO
		(to radioman)
	Warn him.

			HERMAN
He does not have a top secret clearance!

			OTTO
		(epee to Herman's throat)
	Warn him!

Obersturmfuhrer Kreiss nods to the radioman who begins sending as Otto
turns and leaves. We move in on Obersturmfuhrer Kreiss' face. He would
love to kill Otto about now.

					CUT TO

INTERIOR MONKEY BAR - NIGHT - ON JAKE AND LOUIE

as they enter the bar. Jake is carrying the package he brought for Sarah.
He looks around for her with a smile until he spots....

CORKY

sitting alone at the table, bleary eyed and talking to Jack.

			CORKY
Think I should tell him, Jack?

Jack barks twice.

			JAKE
	Tell me what?

			CORKY
		(turns and grins drunkenly)
	Hiya, Jake.

Jake shoots a look at Gushie.

			GUSHIE
It was that guy who flew in with you.

			LOUIE
	Gushie. You know better.

			GUSHIE
	Well, Sarah was with them.

Jake looks surprised.

			JAKE
	Where is she?

			CORKY
	Don't tell him!

			JAKE
	Don't tell me what?

Gushie lowers his head.

EXTERIOR MONKEY BAR BACK STAIRS - NIGHT - CLOSE ON SARAH

She is almost to the top of the stairs, looking back down. Kimble is a
few steps behind her, a bottle in one hand, the canister sticking out of
his pocket, eyeing her rear.

ON WILLIE

He is coming up the street and sees Kimble and Sarah on the steps. They
don't see him as he ducks back into the shadows.

WILLIE'S POINT OF VIEW ON THE CANISTER

sticking out of Kimble's coat pocket.

BACK ON WILLIE

His eyes widen.

					CUT TO

INTERIOR SARAH'S ROOM - NIGHT - ON THE DOOR

as it opens and Sarah steps inside. She turns on the small desk lamp then
turns to Kimble, who is taking in the room. She tried to take the bottle
from his hand and he makes a move to kiss her, which she deftly avoids.

			SARAH
Let me fix us a couple of drinks first.

			KIMBLE
		(eyeing her)
I've had a couple of drinks.

CLOSE ON SARAH

She pours the drinks, then adds a jigger of something to one of the
glasses from a small blue bottle.

			SARAH
Well I've got to catch up and I don't like drinking alone.

He crosses the room and throws his arms around her, nuzzling her neck.
She palms the little blue bottle.

			KIMBLE
There's something I've got to tell you, Sarah Stickney White.

She turns in his arms and holds up his drink. He takes it and they clink
glasses.

			SARAH
	What?

He tosses down the drink, then moves to kiss her.

			KIMBLE
	That you are very...very beautiful.

Sarah laughs and moves out of his arms, sliding across the room to sit on
the bed. She crosses her legs.

			SARAH
I'll bet you say that to all the girls.

Kimble turns and smiles...he likes the pursuit.

EXTERIOR MONKEY BAR BALCONY - NIGHT - ON WILLIE

as he sneaks along the porch towards Sarah's room.

INTERIOR SARAH'S ROOM - ON BOTH

Kimble pours another drink and crosses to the bed. He's wobbling a bit.
As he sits down the springs sink.

			KIMBLE
I've hunted rogue elephants in Burma...caught record black marlin
	off the Kona Coast...
		(lays back on the bed)
...I've even got the Boone and Crockett. But you are going to
	be....

He's fading fast. Sarah looks down at him...He's out cold.

			SARAH
	No, I'm not.

She removes the canister from his pocket and crosses to her desk.

CLOSE ON SARAH

At the desk beside the window, she turns the canister over a couple of
times examining it. Then she begins to unscrew the lid.

EXTREMELY CLOSE ON THE CANISTER

as the lid begins to screw off.

INTERIOR SARAH'S ROOM - NIGHT - CLOSE ON SARAH

as she unscrews the lid to the canister. It is almost off when there's a
knock at the rear door to the room. Sarah screws the lid back on and sets
the canister on the desk.

			JAKE'S VOICE
		(low)
	Sarah....

			SARAH
	Coming.

She gets up and exits frame. We hold on the canister to see Willie's arm
slip through the open window and take it.

ANGLE ON REAR DOOR

as Sarah opens it to reveal Jake with the package. He tries to look into
the room without being too obvious about it.

			JAKE
	I...ah...picked this up on Tagataya.
		(hands it to her)
No big deal. I just though you might like it.

			SARAH
		(lights up)
	Jake. How sweet.

Jake can't control it any longer.

			JAKE
Damn it, Sarah, how could you let Corky get snockered like that? I
had to carry him to bed.

			SARAH
		(defensive)
He was already snockered, as you put it, when I got there....

They stare at each other for a moment, then....

			JAKE
	Sarah...Gushie said that you...you....

			SARAH
	I what?

			JAKE
		(another tack)
	Is there a...ah...a....

			SARAH
	A what?

Jake just can't get it out. He shakes his head and turns away.

			JAKE
Nothing. It's none of my business.
		(beat)
	Good night.

As he walks away....

			SARAH
	Jake.

			JAKE
		(turns)
	Yeah.

			SARAH
Don't let the bed bugs bite.

			JAKE
		(soft smile)
Don't let Louie hear you say that.

And he walks on down the hall.

CLOSE ON SARAH

as she closes the door. She looks at the package and holds it up to her.

			SPARKS
	Looks that way, sir.

			U.S. CAPTAIN
Can you raise White on Boragora?

			SPARKS
No, sir. She has to radio me.

He looks up to the clock.

EXTERIOR BORAGORA DOCK - DAY

A sleek powerboat approaches the dock. One of the sailors leaps off and
ties it down. Obersturmfuhrer Kreiss, dressed in a white suit, and Otto,
in his Panama, climb the ladder and step onto the dock. The
Obersturmfuhrer checks his watch.

			HERMAN
I should be back before Doctor Kimble arrives. But if I am not....

			OTTO
I think I am quite capable of entertaining him. Obersturmfuhrer.

Obersturmfuhrer Kreiss looks around, panicked that someone might have
overheard his rank.

			HERMAN
		(whisper)
Watch how you address me! I don't want anyone to know I'm an SS
	officer.

			OTTO
	Sorry.

Herman stiffens, does a snap turn on his heel and strides down the dock,
every inch the soldier.

			OTTO
		(calling after him)
	Ah...Herman.

The Obersturmfuhrer stops and turns.

			OTTO
	You're practically goose stepping.

The Obersturmfuhrer reddens, turns and starts to stride off again, but
catches himself. He finds it very difficult to walk like a civilian.

					CUT TO

EXTERIOR MONKEY BAR BALCONY - DAY - ON JAKE AND JACK

as they come walking towards the steps.

			JAKE
Last I heard a plantation owner named Gillson in Borneo had it. I
wrote him a letter and should have an answer any week now.
		(beat)
	You believe me, don't you?

Jack barks once.

			JAKE
		(pissed)
You're not going to let up until I get your eye back, are you?

Jack barks once. Jake shakes his head, just then Sarah's door opens. She
sees Jake and gives a big sigh of relief.

			SARAH
	Thank God.

She grabs Jake and drags him into the room before he can protest. It
happens so fast she slams the door in Jack's face. Then, a beat later,
she opens it and Jack runs in.

INTERIOR SARAH'S ROOM - CLOSE ON JACK

as he growls.

ANOTHER ANGLE - FEATURE SARAH

Kimble, his upper torso and head soaking wet, is still out on the bed. As
Jake looks on, he's both embarrassed and pissed.

			SARAH
	It's not what you think.

			JAKE
Sarah, you're a grown woman. Your personal life....

			SARAH
Jake, stop it! If I have a fling it won't be with someone I thought
	was a defector!

			JAKE
	Defector?

			SARAH
Last night I thought Kimble was an American scientist defecting to
	the Germans with important information.

			JAKE
	What kind of information?

			SARAH
I don't know. But this morning I found out Kimble's an American
agent posing as a defector to find out where the Germans are
	carrying out an important experiment.

			JAKE
	What kind of....

			SARAH
		(cuts in)
I don't know. But that Tutsami you picked up yesterday had a
canister. A canister Intelligence thinks could be part of the
	German experiment.

			JAKE
	Yeah...Corky had it.

			SARAH
Last night, Kimble took it from Corky. I took it from Kimble.

			JAKE
	Where is it?

			SARAH
		(softly)
	I don't know.

			JAKE
	Sarah! What do you know?

ANOTHER ANGLE

as Sarah grabs him and pulls him to the window. As they look out....

			SARAH
Kimble's supposed to rendezvous with the Germans at oh eight
	hundred.

THEIR POINT OF VIEW - BORAGORA DOCK

we can see the power launch and Otto pacing back and forth at the end of
the dock.

			SARAH'S VOICE
	He struts like a German.

BACK ON JAKE AND SARAH

as they watch.

			JAKE
What do you want me to do?

			SARAH
	Wake Kimble up.

Jake moves to check Kimble.

			JAKE
	Why is he wet?

			SARAH
I've been throwing cold water in his face.

			JAKE
		(examining)
What'd you do, hit him over the head with a baseball bat?

			SARAH
	I Mickey Finned him.
		(holds up bottle)
I was supposed to use a thimble full. To make sure, I used a
	jigger.

			JAKE
Sarah...he's going to be out a long, long time.

			SARAH
		(desperate)
Jake, you have to do something!

Jake is staring at Kimble's face.

			SARAH
	Jake! It's ten to eight.

He checks Kimble's scar...it's real. Sarah is going nuts. Finally, Jake
stands and peels off his leather jacket, then starts unbuttoning his
shirt.

			JAKE
	Okay. I've got an idea.
		(boyish smile)
But it's going to cost you, Sarah Stickney White.
		(beat)
	Right, Jack?

Jack barks twice.

CLOSE ON SARAH

for her shocked reaction...she has no idea what Jake's plan is and the
wrong idea about what it might cost her.

					CUT TO

EXTERIOR BORAGORA DOCK - DAY - ON OTTO

as he paces the dock. He removes a handkerchief and wipes the sweat from
his brow. In the middle of this he stops and peers down the dock.

OTTO'S POINT OF VIEW - JAKE

as he strides down the dock towards Otto, dressed in Kimble's clothes and
with a matching scar on his cheek (Sarah's makeup, which, of course, is
what it cost her).

CLOSE ON BOTH

as they meet. Otto clicking his heels. Jake offering an American
handshake.

			OTTO
	Doctor Kimble?

			JAKE
	Yes.

			OTTO
		(smiles)
I have been looking forward to meeting you for a long, long time.

			JAKE
	Well...that's very nice of....

			OTTO
		(continuing)
Ever since you won the American Championship at Princeton in '32.
		(beat)
I warn you. I think I can beat you.

			JAKE
		(confused)
	Beat me....

JAKE'S POINT OF VIEW - OTTO'S DUELING SCAR

as he smiles.

			OTTO'S VOICE
	Yah!

BACK CLOSE ON JAKE

He unconsciously touches the scar on his face.

			JAKE
		(beat)
Very possibly...in fact, the more I think about it, I'm quite sure
	you can.

WIDE ON BOTH

Otto laughs and leads Jake to the ladder.

			OTTO
You toy with me, Herr Doctor. Your reputation precedes you. You
like to have your opponents underestimate you, jah?

			JAKE
		(weak laugh)
	Jah.

					CUT TO

EXTERIOR WAREHOUSE NEAR THE DOCK - DAY

The Obersturmfuhrer, clutching the canister tightly, and Willie, stop at
the edge of the building.

			WILLIE
		(looking around)
This is as far as I should go. It would not be good to be seen with
	you by too many people.

			HERMAN
You will be mentioned in my dispatches.

			WILLIE
No. No. Don't do that. Then they'll just want to move me to a
	more important post.

			HERMAN
	You don't want that?

Two native girls pass, hips swaying seductively (they all seem to walk
that way).

			WILLIE
		(eyeing the girls)
Someone must man this post for Der Fatherland. It might as well be
	me.

Herman looks disgusted. He shakes his head and turns, spotting Jake and
Otto as they climb down the ladder to the boat.

			HERMAN
	Ah...Doctor Kimble has arrived.

Willie turns and looks.

WILLIE'S POINT OF VIEW OF JAKE

as he climbs into the boat, his back to camera.

			WILLIE'S VOICE
	Jah. I met him yesterday....

Jake turns full face to the camera.

CLOSE ON WILLIE

as he recognizes Jake and turns white.

			WILLIE
		(beat)
	Mein Gott....

			HERMAN
	What is it?

			WILLIE
	Doctor Kimble is...is....

			HERMAN
	Is what?

			WILLIE
	...Ah, on time.
		(beat)
Which reminds me, I am going to be late for evening vespers.

			HERMAN
	At eight in the morning?

			WILLIE
They require much preparation. Auf wiedersehen.

Willie hurries away. We hold on Herman watching him go. He knows
something is wrong, but not what. He looks back to the boat.

HERMAN'S POINT OF VIEW - JAKE AND OTTO

sitting in the back of the launch talking.

BACK CLOSE ON THE OBERSTURMFUHRER

His eyes narrow slightly as the thought occurs that whatever it is, it has
to do with Kimble.

INTERIOR MONKEY BAR - DAY

It's practically empty as the bartender stocks the back bar and a native
sweeps up. Louie is standing at the bar feeding the parrot as Willie
enters.

			LOUIE
	Ah, Reverend, you're up early.

			WILLIE
		(depressed)
Could I have some schnapps, bitte.

			PARROT
		(whistles)
Load him up. Load him up.

Louie motions to the bartender.

			LOUIE
		(surprised)
I don't think I've ever seen you drink before.

			WILLIE
	It's been a tiring day.

			LOUIE
It's only ten o'clock...ah, you've been giving blessings.

			WILLIE
	I wish.

			PARROT
So do I. So do I.

The bartender hands Willie his drink and he tosses it down. He motions
for the bartender to refill the glass, as he does....

			WILLIE
I have a terrible decision to make...a decision affecting a man who
even though we are not what one would call close...I would like to
	think is a friend.

			LOUIE
	What is this terrible decision?

			WILLIE
This man is liable to cause great harm to my...church. Yet, if I
warn...my bishop, he will ex...communicate him.
		(sighs)
I don't know what to do.

			LOUIE
It sounds as if this...sinner has violated church law, oui?

			WILLIE
	Most definitely.

			LOUIE
And he knew what he was doing?

			WILLIE
Jah. I am sure of it.

			LOUIE
I don't see that he leaves you much choice.

			WILLIE
	No. No, he doesn't.

Willie tosses down the drink and exits. We move in on Louie and the
parrot.

			LOUIE
Whoever this sinner is, I feel sorry for him, eh?

			PARROT
	Poor soul...poor soul.

Louie looks with surprise at the parrot and we....

EXTERIOR POWER LAUNCH - DAY - ON JAKE

He is bent over the stern of the launch moaning from seasickness, as the
launch cuts the swells at full throttle. The Germans watch Jake; Herman
with suspicion and revulsion, Otto with concern.

			OTTO
I'm sorry, Herr Doctor, that this last leg of your journey should be
	so upsetting.

REVERSE - JAKE'S FACE

He is turned away from them, faking his illness as he scans astern for
signs of the Goose. Finally, he stands and faces the others, trying to
look as miserable as possible.

			JAKE
How much longer 'til we get to....

ON GROUP

			OTTO
	Trou Dans la Mer?

Herman notes Jake's surprised reaction.

			HERMAN
	You knew our destination?

			JAKE
(not sure what he should know)
The Hole in the Sea?..by reputation. Kind of off the beaten track.

			OTTO
	Precisely why I chose it.
		(beat)
The island will fascinate you from a purely scientific
standpoint...an ancient, submerged volcano. The 1911 French
oceanographic survey never could measure the depth of its lagoon.

			HERMAN
They ran out of line at one mile.

			JAKE
		(knows this)
	Six miles.

The Obersturmfuhrer stares at Jake, who turns and reels from another
attack of his "seasickness."

			HERMAN
What I find fascinating is that a world class yachting enthusiast
should be ill on such a calm day.

			OTTO
Herman! You'll offend Doctor Kimble with your suspicions.
Remember, he is willingly giving the Third Reich the benefit of his
	genius.

			HERMAN
	I don't trust him.

			OTTO
		(to Jake)
For the SS that is an occupational hazard. Relax, Herman. Smell
the salt air. Smell the nectar of our coming success. Be friendly.

			HERMAN
I am only doing my job. I'm sure Herr Kimble understands that.

			JAKE
	Oh, sure.
		(hard)
You're the type who'd love me to be something other than I am...a
phony or a double agent. It might get you an extra pat on the back
	from...Der Fuhrer, jah?

Herman stiffens and looks as if he's going to take a poke at Jake.

			OTTO
		(smiles)
You see, Obersturmfuhrer. I told you he was a champion
	fencer...even with words.

			HERMAN
	Why is he seasick?

			JAKE
Yachts have sails. Completely different motion than a power launch.
	And, more important...
		(starts to gag)
	They don't smell of gasoline.

Jake moans and dives for the side, he fakes retching as he looks for some
sign of the Goose. Otto is quite sympathetic, but Herman isn't sure.

					CUT TO

EXTERIOR ON THE GOOSE

as it drifts through the clouds five thousand feet above the ocean.

			CORKY'S VOICE
I...I still don't understand. Why would anyone kidnap Jake?

INTERIOR COCKPIT

Corky is at the controls, Sarah beside him scanning the horizon with a
pair of binoculars and Jack, of course, sitting between them, taking it
all in.

			SARAH
I don't know. I just saw these men take him away in a power launch.
Corky! Trust me, he didn't want to go.
		(spots them)
	There they are!

SARAH'S POINT OF VIEW THROUGH THE BINOCULARS ON THE LAUNCH

as it plows through the seas.

BACK CLOSE ON CORKY AND SARAH

Corky gets a determined look and reaches for the throttles.

			CORKY
They can't kidnap Jake and get away with it...I'm taking the Goose
	down to buzz her!

			SARAH
	No!

			CORKY
	No?

			SARAH
		(putting on headset)
The Navy's going to rescue Jake wherever they take him.

			CORKY
	Huh?

Sarah begins to tune the radio.

			CORKY
Sarah...where'd you learn how to use the radio?

			SARAH
		(a plea)
Corky...do me a favor, forget everything you see and hear today.

Corky looks at her, then turns back to flying the Goose.

			CORKY
	Yeah, sure. That's easy.

As Sarah tunes the radio....

			SPARK'S VOICE
She's got a fix on them, sir.

INTERIOR HANCOCK RADIO ROOM

Sparks is listening as the captain waits to put another mark on a map of
the Marivellas which is tracing the Goose's flight.

			SPARKS
		(listening)
Five nautical miles northwest of Tonaga...heading oh seven five at
	about thirty-five knots.

The captain makes a mark on the chart. We move in on it as he connects a

					CUT TO

EXTERIOR OPEN SEA - DAY - ON THE LAUNCH

as it plows through the swells. Jake is leaning over the back scanning
the skies. He breaks into a grin as he spots the Goose high overhead. He
takes a deep breath and turns to the others.

			OTTO
		(relieved)
	You are feeling better.

			JAKE
Getting my sea legs, I guess.

			HERMAN
	If you ever lost them.

Jake looks like he might throw up on the Obersturmfuhrer, which causes the
fat little man to move away in a hurry. Otto laughs and eases up beside
Jake.

			OTTO
Don't press too hard...they may be disgusting, but they're also
	dangerous.

			JAKE
	I'll keep that in mind.

At that moment, the boat slows, the engines cutting to an idle.

			JAKE
	What's wrong?
		(looks around)
Trou Dans la Mer is still a couple of hours from here.

			OTTO
Jah. But for security reasons we can't go there directly.

Otto turns and looks off to one side. As Jake follows his look....

THEIR POINT OF VIEW - OPEN SEA

Nothing but waves, then the conning tower of the U-boat breaks the
surface.

					CUT TO

INTERIOR GOOSE - CLOSE ON SARAH

using the binoculars.

			SARAH
	A U-boat! They're transferring to a U-boat!
		(puts down binoculars)
	That's not fair!

			CORKY
		(getting real worried)
	Sarah...why would Germans kidnap Jake?

			SARAH
		(thinking)
	I told you I don't know.

			CORKY
		(softy)
	I think you do.

Jack barks twice.

			SARAH
Okay, Corky, maybe I do. But the important thing now is to find
	where they're taking Jake.

			CORKY
How? We can't follow a submarine in the Goose.

			SARAH
		(an idea)
I'll bet the island they're taking Jake to is somewhere near where
you picked up that Tutsami yesterday.
		(beat)
	Where was that?

			CORKY
I dunno. We were in a storm...flying legs.

			SARAH
	Legs?

			CORKY
I don't think I could explain it right now. My mind only works
forward. Like a plane. When I try and go different, I just get
	confused.

			SARAH
		(after a beat)
You were flying back from Tagataya, right?

			CORKY
	Yeah.

			SARAH
Then if you fly there and turn around...you can retrace your route!

			CORKY
	Tagataya's over an hour away.

			SARAH
	Do you have a choice?

Jack barks once and looks from Corky to Sarah.

					CUT TO

INTERIOR WILLIE'S UNDERGROUND ROOM - DAY - CLOSE ON WILLIE

as he sits before the radio, its tubes glowing.

			SARAH'S VOICE
	Good. Then it's settled.

He stares at the radio, torn between his duty to country and his
friendship for Jake. At last he makes up his mind.

			WILLIE
		(to himself)
	Ach, Jake. Ver damn!

He begins to send.

					DISSOLVE TO

EXTERIOR ISLAND LAGOON - DAY - ESTABLISHING

The submarine is gently riding at anchor in the lagoon, as Tutsami natives
continue to raft out equipment from shore to the U-boat.

			OTTO'S VOICE
Well...do you have anything like it in America?

INTERIOR CAVE - DAY - ON THE BLACK PEARL

An ominous black sphere, ten feet in diameter, with a blood red swastika
painted on it. It rides on a raft in the cave between the catwalks. Two
men in silver suits complete with hoods are working through an open hatch
on the bomb. One is holding the canister of S-90. On the catwalk, Jake,
Otto, the U-boat captain, and Herman are watching from behind a metal
shield with a thick glass window. The Tutsamis are chained to the
opposite catwalk.

			JAKE
		(awed)
	Nothing!

			OTTO
I estimate it to be at least a thousand times more powerful than our
	two-ton bombs.

			JAKE
		(shocked)
	You're kidding!

			HERMAN
		(suspicious)
	You are surprised?

			JAKE
		(recovering)
Just that...we don't have anything of that size in development.

CLOSE ON THE CANISTER

as the men in the silver suits unscrew it. The cave is lit by the blue
glow. They withdraw the S-90 and insert it into the bomb. The Tutsamis
begin to chant.

			TUTSAMIS
	Esnandee! Esnandee!

CLOSE ON OTTO, HERMAN AND JAKE

as they watch.

			HERMAN
		(smiles)
The fools think it is the power of God.

			OTTO
	It is.

BACK ON THE BOMB

One of the silver-suited men presses a red plunger on the bomb. A hissing
sound begins.

BACK ON THE TRIO

Otto checks his watch.

			OTTO
We use a chemical trigger to unite two elements of the S-90.
Nothing can stop it from detonating in...precisely one hour.

			GERMAN CAPTAIN
We must be underway in twenty minutes or I cannot be six miles to
sea when the device is detonated.

			OTTO
		(hand on Jake's shoulder)
Which gives us just enough time to have a little match....jah?

			JAKE
		(staring at bomb)
	Swell.

					CUT TO

INTERIOR GOOSE COCKPIT - ON CORKY AND SARAH

as they fly away from Tagataya.

			CORKY
We started the first leg...about here.

			SARAH
		(after a beat)
	Well...What are you waiting for?

			CORKY
I can't remember if we started flying the legs to port...or
	starboard.

Jack barks once.

			CORKY
	Port?

Jack barks twice this time.

ON THE GOOSE

as it banks to the left.

					CUT TO

EXTERIOR GERMAN ENCAMPMENT - DAY

Most of the equipment is gone. Otto stands wearing a bloused shirt and
pants, facing Jake. He is holding an epee. Herman is about to hand a
second epee to Jake.

			JAKE
You know I injured my hand, I don't know how good I'll be left
	handed.

			OTTO
		(laughs)
	Still trying to fool me.
		(beat)
Everyone knows the famous Doctor Kimble is what you Americans call a
	southpaw. Jah?

			JAKE
		(smiles)
	Jah.

			OTTO
	En garde!

Jake reluctantly takes up his position.

INTERIOR GOOSE - DAY

Sarah looking through the binoculars as Corky sweats and flies.

			CORKY
That's leg number three...we spotted them somewhere around here.

			SARAH
	Where's the nearest island?

			CORKY
		(looking around)
	I dunno.

			SARAH
		(spots something)
There...what's that island on the horizon...
		(pointing)
	...there.

			CORKY
		(looking)
Ah...ah...I think it is Trou Dans...ah...the hole in the sea they
	call it.

					CUT TO

EXTERIOR GERMAN ENCAMPMENT - ON JAKE AND OTTO

as Otto immediately pins Jake.

			OTTO
		(thrusting)
	Une botte!
		(beat)
Herr Doctor...you make it too easy. You must not...what is the
	American phrase..."pull my leg!"

			HERMAN'S VOICE
	He's not pulling your leg.

ANOTHER ANGLE TO INCLUDE HERMAN

as he walks up.

			HERMAN
		(continuing)
	Are you...Mr. Cutter?

Jake catches his breath and says nothing.

			OTTO
	What?

			HERMAN
I have just received information that our Doctor Kimble here is
actually the American pilot on Boragora...Jake Cutter.

			OTTO
	Is this true?

			JAKE
Of course not. He still wants to prove I'm a...

Herman steps forward and wipes Jake's scar off his face with his gloved
hand.

			JAKE
		(finishing)
	...fake.

CLOSE ON OTTO

as he removes the sword tip, baring the sharp blade.

			OTTO
I take my dueling seriously, Herr...Cutter.

Suddenly the epee flashes and Otto leaves a perfect dueling cut on Jake's
left cheek. Then he starts to back away....

			JAKE
		(hand to cheek)
	Why didn't you kill me?

			OTTO
Oh, my bomb will do that...that way it's much more...dramatic.

He jumps into the rubber boat and they power out to the submarine, leaving
Jake standing alone with the shackled Tutsamis in the background.

CUT TO

EXTERIOR DESTROYER HANCOCK - DAY

as she cuts a wide arcing turn.

			SPARKS' VOICE
White's spotted a German U-boat three miles south of an island
	called...

INTERIOR RADIO ROOM

as Sparks listens on the radio, the captain at his side.

			SPARKS
		(continuing)
	...the hole in the sea?

			U.S. CAPTAIN
		(looking at map)
	Trou Dans la Mer.
		(beat)
Tell her we'll be there within the hour.

As Sparks begins to send....

					CUT TO

EXTERIOR LAGOON - DAY - ON THE GOOSE

as it comes in for a bouncy but safe landing.

ANGLE FEATURING JAKE

as he and the Tutsamis watch the Goose taxi up. Sarah sticks her head out
the window and yells.

			SARAH
	Hiya, Jake...how's tricks?

			JAKE
		(shouts)
Sarah...is it possible for a bomb to be as powerful as a million
	pounds of TNT?

			SARAH
	Gosh...I hope not!

					CUT TO

INTERIOR CAVE - DAY

Jake, Sarah and Corky are staring up at the bomb. There is a quiet
hissing coming from it.

			SARAH
	Incredible.

			CORKY
	Jake...could we get outta here?

			JAKE
Which of the Tutsamis do you want to leave behind? We can't take
	them all on the Goose.

Corky looks crestfallen.

			SARAH
There's gotta be a way to defuse it.

			JAKE
We open the hatch and that S-90 stuff'll probably kill us all.

			CORKY
Why don't we deep six it?

They ignore him at first, then both turn and look at him. He smiles.

				CUT TO

EXTERIOR U-BOAT CONNING TOWER - DAY

The captain, Otto, and the Obersturmfuhrer are staring at the island
through long-range binoculars.

			GERMAN CAPTAIN
	Six point three miles, sir.

			OTTO
	That is sufficient.

			GERMAN CAPTAIN
		(into tube)
	All engines stop.

The diesels burble and slow. Kreiss is staring through the binoculars.

			HERMAN
I can barely see the top of the island.

			GERMAN CAPTAIN
That is due to the curvature of the Earth.

			OTTO
Don't worry, Obersturmfuhrer. When my bomb goes off, you will see
	it. That much I guarantee.

					CUT TO

EXTERIOR GOOSE COCKPIT - ON JAKE

His head leaning out the window, looking back, as both engines idle.

			JAKE
		(shouts)
	Ready?

JAKE'S POINT OF VIEW - THE CAVE

Corky is standing at the mouth of it with some Tutsami natives. The
hawser is running from the cave to the cargo hatch on the side of the
Goose. Corky waves.

ON THE GOOSE

as Jake pours on the power. The Goose starts across the lagoon and the
hawser pulls taut. The Black Pearl emerges from the cave on the raft as
the Goose tows it out.

					CUT TO

EXTERIOR U-BOAT CONNING TOWER

as Otto passes out dark goggles to the others.

			OTTO
	Two minutes.

					CUT TO

INTERIOR COCKPIT - CLOSE ON JAKE

as he rams the throttles to take-off power. After a few seconds, he yells
back into the rear....

			JAKE
	Now!

ON SARAH AND A TUTSAMI

standing by the open rear hatch. The hawser leads through it to a ring in
the cargo floor. The Tutsami raises an axe and severs the hawser with one
blow.

ON THE BLACK PEARL

being towed at speed across the lagoon. When the line is severed, the
raft digs in and the huge bomb topples off and sinks out of sight in the
middle of the lagoon.

ON THE U-BOAT CONNING TOWER

as they count down.

			OTTO
	Ninety seconds.

ON THE GOOSE

Jake has beached it on the sand. He climbs out to join the others.

			JAKE
	Come on!

He leads them away from the edge of the lagoon towards a low hill.

UNDERWATER - ON THE BOMB

sinking rapidly. The color of the water darkens from azure to ink blue
and then midnight blue. We know we are going very deep.

CLOSE ON OTTO

He puts the dark goggles over his eyes.

			OTTO
	Thirty seconds.

UNDERWATER - ON THE BOMB

as it bounces off the walls of undersea cliffs, sinking deeper and deeper.

MOVING WITH JAKE AND THE OTHERS

as they climb the small hill overlooking the lagoon. Jake checks his
watch.

			JAKE
It's gonna blow any second now! Take cover!

They throw themselves into the sand.

ON OTTO

His voice quivering with excitement.

			OTTO
	Ten...nine...eight....

UNDERWATER - ON THE BOMB

sinking to the very bottom of the volcano where it finally explodes in a
world-shattering blast of light and noise.

ON THE LAGOON

There is a deep rumble, that grows and grows and then the water splashes
and bubbles and a small cloud of steam rises into the air. But it is
nothing compared to galvanic explosion that took place six miles down.

EXTERIOR U-BOAT CONNING TOWER

as they watch...stunned.

			HERMAN
	That was it?

			OTTO
	I don't understand.

			HERMAN
So much for your super weapon. We could have done more damage with
	a case of dynamite!

			OTTO
We must go back...there has to be a reason.

			LOOKOUT
		(shouts)
Destroyer...two points off the starboard stern.

The captain swings his binoculars to look.

CAPTAIN'S POINT OF VIEW THROUGH BINOCULARS - ON THE HANCOCK

closing fast.

			GERMAN CAPTAIN'S VOICE
	Dive...dive!

BACK ON ALL

as the lookouts scramble down and the klaxon sounds.

			HERMAN
	You can forget going back.

Otto takes one last look at the island; crestfallen, he is the last to
leave the con.

					FADE OUT

			_END OF ACT FOUR_

			_TAG_

FADE IN

EXTERIOR BORAGORA - NIGHT - ESTABLISHING

The Goose is safely back at anchor and the tinkling of the piano can be
heard coming from the Monkey Bar.

INTERIOR ON JAKE'S TABLE

Jake, bandage on his face, and Kimble are seated at a corner table.
Kimble still looks half gone as he calculates on a slide ruler.

			JAKE
It tossed water in the center of the lagoon about a foot or two into
	the air.

			KIMBLE
How long after you dumped the bomb?

			JAKE
	Maybe ninety seconds.
		(as Kimble calculates)
Nothing could be as powerful as they said...could it?

Kimble finishes, his eyes widen for a beat, then he looks to Jake,
covering.

			KIMBLE
	No...of course not.

ON WILLIE

as he races into the Monkey Bar, looking around frantically until he spots
Jake, then with a big grin joins him at the table. Jack growls.

			WILLIE
	Mein Gott! It's true!

			JAKE
		(puzzled)
	What?

			WILLIE
		(all smiles)
	You're alive! I mean...you're back!

Jake and Kimble exchange glances...puzzled. Willie just beams.

			CORKY'S VOICE
	Taa...daaa!

They all turn to see....

CORKY AND SARAH AT THE PIANO

Corky is getting ready to play. Sarah is wearing a new dress.

ON JAKE'S TABLE

as Louie sits down beside Jake, Kimble and Willie.

			LOUIE
	You look pleased, Jake.

Jack barks twice.

			JAKE
Ah...she's wearing the dress I brought her.

			LOUIE
Oh...I thought it might have been something important.

As they exchange looks....

CLOSE ON CORKY AND SARAH

Corky is starting to do the lead-in to "Am I Blue?" but he looks puzzled.

			CORKY
	Sarah...about today....

			SARAH
		(suddenly scared)
	Yes, Corky....

			CORKY
	You did something...ah...
		(looks up and smiles)
	...Sarah, I forget.

Sarah laughs and starts to sing "Am I Blue?" in a very up-tempo mood. We
pull back across the table with Jake, Jack, Willie and Kimble and....
