			_ACT ONE_

FADE IN

EXT. SMALL TROPICAL ISLAND - DAY

Afternnon rain clouds scale the flanks of the old volcano which dominates
the center of the island until only its strange twin-needle peak can be
seen from the surrounding islands. Beneath these clouds the jungle
steams...a jade green sea dotted with brilliant tropical flowers and
filled with the raucous chatter of exotic birds.

CASCADING WATERFALL

Fed by rains falling high up the volcano, the water drops a thousand feet
to a tropical pool surrounded by a thick wall of jungle. We move in on a
lone monkey sitting on a lava ledge which juts out over the pool, quietly
eating a papaya. There is something eerie about this primate, perhaps the
fastidious way he eats or his casual indifference to the water falling
inches from his perch or perhaps it's the perch itself...strategically
dominating the pool...the perfect lookout. Suddenly the monkey stops
eating in midbite. The jungle around him is instantly silent and for a
long time the only sound is that of the water plummeting into the pool,
then, the whack of a machete cuts through the air.

MONKEY'S POINT OF VIEW - THE JUNGLE

The thick vegetation trembles for a moment then a razor-sharp blade
slashes through the leaves and a man steps out. Hanus is in his
midthirties, sunburned and wolf-lean; wearing a rather worn safari shirt
soaked with sweat and white with body salt. He unconsciously adjusts the
webbing holding the holstered Luger to his side and looks up at the huge
monkey.

CLOSE ON THE MONKEY

as it stares back at the man...unafraid.

BACK ON HANUS

staring in awe at the monkey as a second German emerges from the trail
behind him. Kurt is blond, young enough to still carry some baby fat and
wearing a tailored outfit that hints at being a German uniform. At the
sight of the monkey, he automatically unbuttons his holster and puts his
hand on the Luger. Both speak with German accents.

			HANUS
		(awed)
	Incredible.
		(beat)
Look at the size of him!

			KURT
		(touch nervous)
He is just a big monkey.

			HANUS
Look at his eys...he has no fear.

			KURT
Then I shall teach him some.

He pulls the Luger and aims at the monkey. Hanus turns and as Kurt fires,
knocks his arm aside. The bullet ricochets off the ledge inches from the
monkey, who doesn't even blink.

			KURT
		(furious)
	How dare you!

Hanus immediately turns back, locking eyes with the huge primate. He
speaks to Kurt in a low reassuring tone, as if to a child.

			HANUS
Herr Leutner. If the legend is true, this male is a guardian.

			KURT
		(cuts him off)
He is nothing but a monkey!

CLOSE ON MONKEY

At that moment, he stands erect, curls his lips revealing three-inch fangs
and utters a scream so primal it raises the hackles on the necks of both
men.

ON HANUS AND KURT

Kurt involuntarily retreats a couple of steps. Hanus locks eyes with the
huge primate, trying to keep him on the ledge by sheer power of will.

			HANUS
		(low voice)
Don't make any sudden moves, Herr Leutner.
		(beat)
	Back off slowly.

Kurt's furious at being ordered and frightened by the monkey, raises the
Luger and fires, hitting the animal square in the chest.

ON MONKEY

as it screams in pain, then gathers itself and leaps off the ledge toward
the two men below.

ON ALL

Kurt fires two more shots, hitting the monkey in midair. It splashes into
the pool and comes up struggling, still trying to reach him. As it drags
its wounded body out of the water, Kurt steps forward and calmly executes
it with a bullet in the head. The monkey slumps dead, half in and half
out of the pool.

			KURT
		(smugly)
	You see...just a monkey.

He shoves it with his jackboot back into the pool and it floats downstream
through the jungle toward the ocean.

CLOSER ON BOTH MEN

Hanus watches in disgust as the dead monkey floats away, then turns
angrily to Kurt, but before he can speak, another scream pierces the heavy
mists hanging over the pool. Both men spin toward the sound to see....

ANOTHER MONKEY

as it swings from a vine past the waterfall and drops gracefully on the
other side of the pool. It is not nearly as big as the one Kurt just
killed, but its snarl is as vicious and its fangs as deadly.

BACK ON KURT AND HANUS

Before either man can react, another scream and a third monkey appears as
if by magic out of the thick jungle a few meters away. They turn toward
it and a fourth drops out of the trees behind them.

DOWN ANGLE ON POOL

as a half dozen of the terrifying primates surround the two men, their
screams and snarls so loud they block the sound of the waterfall. Then
suddenly all the monkeys are silent.

CLOSE ON KURT AND HANUS

as they stand amid the beasts. For a moment nothing happens, then a huge
monkey the size of the original guardian, drops seemingly from nowhere
onto the lava ledge overhanging the pool. The other monkeys look to him
as he studies the two men.

			KURT
		(frightened)
	Sergeant...what do we do?

			HANUS
		(slowly)
	I think...we die.

CLOSE ON THE NEW GUARDIAN

For a long moment, he stares in silence at the two men who have invaded
the sacred pool. Then, with a blood curdling scream, he signals the tribe
to kill and the titles begin.

ON HANUS

He cooly drops two of the charging monkeys before a third takes him
down from behind.

ON KURT

backing into the water, yelling in fear, firing wildly. A huge male lands
on his back, sinking yellow fangs deep into his fat neck. As Kurt arches
his back and screams, the rest of the tribe falls upon him, ripping him
apart.

WIDE ON POOL

It's over as quickly as it started. As the bloody bodies of Kurt and
Hanus float downstream, the monkeys pick up their dead and disappear into
the jungle. All that is left is the new guardian on the ledge.

MOVING IN CLOSE ON THE GUARDIAN MONKEY

he picks up the half-eaten papaya and begins to eat as he watches from his
perch. Over this -- titles end and we hear....

			JAKE'S VOICE
	Whatta you say, Jack?

					CUT TO

INT. DOCKSIDE DIVE - DAY - CLOSE ON JAKE

He's a rugged, cigar-smoking pilot who some women might call handsome.
Some might call interesting. But all would call sexy. He is wearing a
leather flying jacket (circa: 1935) and a flying cap with what in a few
years will be known as the fifty-mission crush. He is holding his poker
hand to someone we can't see, as he stares across the green-baized table
to his opponents...a French sailor in the traditional wide-striped shirt
and tassel-topped cap, a German naval officer with a dueling scar and
Monocle, an American merchant sailor with a missing arm and a huge
Black Man in a white suit and Palm Beach hat. The four men are staring
back in disbelief.

			JAKE
	Well....

We hear a bark.

CLOSE ON JACK

sitting on the bar behind Jake, looking intently over his shoulder at the
hand. Jack is a short-haired, black and white fox terrier who looks as if
his seven years have been spent in constant dogfights.

BACK ON ALL - FEATURE JAKE AND JACK

Even though it's daylight, very little can penetrate the filthy Isinglass
windows of the bar. The only real light is from the green and brass
kerosene lamps above the table giving an aged look to the scene even in
1938. A pretty native girl brings a Coke to Jake and takes away the empty
bottle. The German with the Monocle smiles and pours three fingers of
red whiskey into his dirty glass. Jake picks up on it.

			JAKE
		(explaining)
	Just can't drink and fly.

			MONOCLE
		(thick Geman accent)
You Americans don't seem able to drink and bet either.

Jake locks eyes with Monocle as the German neatly tosses down the three
fingers of whiskey. After a beat, Jake smiles to himself and leans
forward to check the bets lying on the table.

			JAKE
		(innocently)
	What's the bet again?

JAKE'S POINT OF VIEW - BETS ON THE TABLE

In the middle of the green cloth is a pile of French francs, English pound
notes, German deutsche marks, American dollars, a ruby ring, a string of
pearls, a bit of jade and a Dutch passport.

			MONOCLE'S VOICE
		(exaggerated patience)
Der ruby ring and twenty deutsche marks to you.

BACK - FEATURING JAKE AND JACK

as Jake looks up to the Black Man.

			JAKE
	And that's....

			BLACK MAN
		(English accent)
	Fifty dollars, American.

			JAKE
		(shakes his head)
	Fifty dollars...
		(to Jack)
You sure you wanna do this?

Jack barks once. Jake signs and puts the hand down and turns to the dog.

			JAKE
Okay. But remember, it was your idea.

ON THE OTHERS

as they watch what Jake is doing, first with curiousity and then with a
growing look of surprise.

CLOSE ON A TABLETOP

Something drops spinning next to bets. We move in tighter and it spins to
a stop...it's an eye.

			JAKE'S VOICE
	We'll see you and raise.

CLOSE ON JAKE

as he ties a leather eyepatch around one of Jack's eyes.

			MONOCLE
		(shocked)
	Mitt a glass eye?

			JAKE
It's opal with a sapphire center. Cost me a couple of hundred
bucks in '36 when Jack and I were flying gold outta Peru.
		(fondly remembering)
We were flush then. Right Jack?

Jack barks once as Jake turns and picks up his cards.

			JAKE
	Well...whatta ya say?

CLOSE ON OTHERS

The Black Man gingerly picks up the glistening eye and holds it up to the
light. It sparkles. He begins to laugh.

			BLACK MAN
It's worth at least 1200 deutsche marks on the Singapore market.

He lays the eye on the green cloth in front of Monocle who studies it for
a beat, then reaches into his breast pocket and pulls out a wad of German
deutsche marks. He snaps them down on the table next to the eye.

			MONOCLE
	Call.

CLOSE ON JAKE

puffing on the cigar, all smiles as he lays down his poker hand.

			JAKE
	Three beautiful ladies.

					CUT TO

EXT. ISLAND WHARF - DAY - CLOSE ON JACK

trotting down the wood planks, looking quite pissed...still wearing the
eyepatch.

WIDER TO INCLUDE JAKE

half-running, trying to keep up with the trotting dog. Across the
beautiful blue lagoon and beyond the reef, a couple of rusting freighters
ride at anchor.

			JAKE
What are you upset at me for? I asked you if you wanted to bet
	your eye, didn't I?

Jack barks twice.

			JAKE
		(aback)
Whyatta you mean 'no'! I showed you my hand. I said, 'Whatta
	you say?' You said...
		(barks once)
	Right?

Jack barks twice. Jake stops and stares after the trotting dog.

			JAKE
		(suspiciously)
Jack. What are you trying to pull?

Jack trots on ignoring him, so....

			JAKE
	Jack...stay!

CLOSE ON JACK

as he stops. He won't turn and look at Jake who slowly walks towards
him.

			JAKE
		(suspicious)
	Yes is...
		(one bark)
	And no is...
		(two barks)
	Right?

Jack barks once.

			JAKE
	Right. So...
		(beat)
	Jack...what's 'no?'

Jack barks once. Jake looks at him in surprise.

			JAKE
	What do you mean no's...
		(barks once)

Jack takes that as a signal to trot on down the pier. We hold on Jake
shouting after him.

			JAKE
Oh, I get it. You're trying to switch signals on me. You want
everybody to think I lost your eye again. Well it won't work!
	All the world knows...
		(barks once)
	...is yes and...
		(barks twice)
	...is no!
		(beat)
	Jack! You hear me, Jack!

EXT. END OF WHARF - DAY - CLOSE ON MONKEY

A normal one, but highly agitated as we pull back from his cage to reveal
it among the cargo at the end of the dock. There are boxes of French
champagne, pates, liqueurs and two large crates from Holland marked
"Bibles." It's all waiting to be loaded on the white and maroon, twin-
engined Grumman Goose moored below the pier. The Goose has seen
better days...her paint is peeling, wings patched, there's even a long oil
streak extending from the port engine, but like any truly beautiful woman,
no matter how much she's been through, her classic lines will always
show. As our pull-back continues we see why the monkey is so agitated.
Cornered against a crate of Bibles is a pretty young girl named Sarah
White. Sarah is a striking redhead in her early twenties who looks like
she should be sitting at the Algonquin bar verbally fencing with the
American literary left rather than fending off the advances of Sam, a
rather large man in his thirties with groping hands who's her manager.

			SARAH
Darn it, Sam, it must be over a hundred. It's too hot for this!

			SAM
	It's never too hot.

He tries to kiss her.

			SARAH
		(angrily)
	Sam! Stop it!

			SAM
		(leers)
Come on, Sarah. A little nice, nice won't hurt!

Just then we hear a growl and Sam spins around.

CLOSE ON JACK

standing a few feet from them, growling at the big man.

			SAM'S VOICE
	Get outta here, mutt!

Jack's hackles go up, he lowers his head slightly and growls deeper.

			SARAH
		(concerned)
	Sam...don't hurt the dog. Please.

Sam picks up a crowbar lying atop the crates and starts slowly towards
Jack.

			SARAH
Sam! hey, I'll kiss you if that's what you want.

Sam hesitates, Jack continues to stand his ground, growling. Finally Sam
walks back to Sarah.

			SAM
	That's more like it, girlee.

He takes Sarah in his arms to kiss her. The second their lips touch, Jack
attacks...laying into the big man's leg. Sam yells and spins around, Jack
hanging on even though all four of his feet are off the ground. Sarah
screams.

ON JAKE

as he runs the last few feet down the wharf and around the pile of cargo.
At the sight of Jack and Sam....

			JAKE
		(yells)
	Jack. Let go!

Sam grabs the crowbar again and is going to slam Jack with it when Jake
grabs Sam's arm. The second Jake enters the fight, Jack lets go and sits
next to Sarah to watch. The two men stare at each other...then Jake backs
off.

			JAKE
		(to Sam)
I'm sorry. He shouldn't have bit you but he just lost his eye see,
and he's a little upset, so....

Jake doesn't get any more out. Sam slugs him, driving him back into the
champagne crates. Jake shakes it off and looks at Jack. Jack just looks
back...no help there.

			JAKE
		(to Sam)
	Okay. We'll call it even.
		(to Sarah)
	You all right, miss?

She shakes her head...is it "no" or did she just tremble? Jake thinks
it's "no", she's not okay.

			JAKE
Then we won't call it even.

He slugs Sam knocking him into a crate of Bibles.

			SARAH
	No!

Jake looks at Sarah..."no?" While he's looking at Sarah, Sam slugs him.
Jack just watches.

THE FIGHT

It's an old-fashioned donnybrook between two big men as they crash into
the wooden crates and cases. The monkey is screeching, Sarah's
screaming and Jack, well, he's sitting on his haunches enjoying it all.
Either man is capable of putting the other down, but it's Jake who first
lands a combination that drives Sam to his knees. As Jake backs away to
let the man up (it's 1938 and Jake has a tremendous sense of fair play),
Sarah lifts a champagne bottle from a broken case and whacks Jake over
the head with it. He crashes like the 1929 stock market.

CLOSE ON JACK

The dog give Sarah the eye (sorry) as if to say, "Why'd you do that?"
Then, trots over to lick Jake's face.

EXT. WHARF - LATER - JAKE'S POINT OF VIEW

As he comes to, the image focuses and it's Sarah sitting on one of her
suitcases, legs crossed a la Sadie Thompson, scratching the back of Jack's
ear and looking quite angry.

			SARAH
		(sarcastically)
Thanks one heck of a lot!

ON JAKE

He sits up holding his head and leans back against the monkey cage. The
monkey screeches. Jake winces.

			JAKE
		(to Sarah)
Why do I think that sounds sarcastic?

			SARAH
'Cause that's the way I said it!

			JAKE
Lady, I just saved you from a masher!

			SARAH
		(cuts in)
That masher was my manager! I've handled his hot hands from
Liverpool to Singapore to this two-bit island of...Taga...Taga....

			JAKE
	Tagataya.

			SARAH
		(continuing)
Whatever! And I've done it without your help! Now he's taken
the boat to BoragorA to catch the clipper to Hawaii and I'm stuck
here with two suitcases, five bucks, an empty stomach and I
wanna know what you're going to do about it?

			JAKE
	It's Jake.

			SARAH
	It's not Jake!

			JAKE
	That's my name...Jake.

			SARAH
	Oh.

ANOTHER ANGLE

As Jake manages to struggle to his feet, starts putting the crates back
together and carrying them aboard the Goose, he glances at Jack who's
still getting his ear scratched.

			JAKE
And that...pacifist you're petting is Jack.

Sarah kisses one of Jack's ragged ears. She seems oblivious to the eye
patch.

			SARAH
	Thanks for defending me, Jack.

Jack nearly smiles.

			JAKE
I'm the one who got beat up!
(rubbing his head, trying to remember)
I still can't figure how it happened. I had him on the ropes...like
	Louis had Schmeling...then...

			SARAH
		(quietly)
I broke a bottle of champagne over your head.
		(after a beat)
I didn't know it was French champagne.
		(beat)
	That's an attempt at humor.

			JAKE
	Humor. Really.

			SARAH
		(defensive)
Look, I didn't want to get stranded in the middle of the South
Pacific. Sam may be all hands, but like I said, I can handle him.

			JAKE
	I'll bet you can.

			SARAH
What do you mean by that!

As Jake carries the monkey cage on board....

			JAKE
Take it any way it fits, lady.

			SARAH
	It's Sarah. Sarah Stickney White.

Jake disappears into the Goose with the cage.

			JAKE'S VOICE
	Figures.

Sarah glares.

			JAKE'S VOICE
Look, Sarah. The afternoon thunder bumpers around here are real
killers. So, the sooner I get the Goose loaded and outta here, the
	better.

He climbs back out and picks up another crate. She just stares at him.

			JAKE
You know I could us a little help.

			SARAH
	Oh, really.

			JAKE
		(getting angry again)
You did sorta delay my departure by launching a bottle of
	champagne over my head.

			SARAH
	I explained all that.

			JAKE
Okay. If guilt's not enough...I happen to be flying to Boragora.

CLOSE ON SARAH

on her reaction....

					CUT TO

EXT. GRUMMAN GOOSE - DAY - CLOSE ON PORT ENGINE

The prop turns slowly in the sun, then blurs as the engine catches with a
chug that sends a belch of black smoke out the exhaust. The big rotary
rattles and shakes for a few moments before settling into a steady roar.

INT. COCKPIT - ACROSS JAKE, JACK AND SARAH

Satisfied that the port engine is running steady, Jake fires up the
starboard. Jack, sitting between Jake and Sarah, watches the procedure
with a critical eye. The starboard engine catches with the same shake,
rattle and roll.

			SARAH
		(concerned)
Are they supposed to do that?

Jack barks once.

			JAKE
		(smiles)
	That means, yes.

			SARAH
Two barks mean yes. One means no. Everybody knows that.

Jake just stares at her.

EXT. THE GOOSE

as Jake advances the port throttle and turns the amphibian away from the
dock, taxiing into the wind.

INT. COCKPIT - CLOSE ON ALL

Jake smiles at Sarah.

			JAKE
	Ready?

As Sarah nods, Jack turns and disappears into the rear compartment. Sarah
looks back to see where the dog is going.

SARAH'S POINT OF VIEW - JACK

as he trots through the cargo hold past the monkey cage, the Bible crates
and the boxes of champagne to nestle between a parachute and a life jacket
by the rear door.

BACK CLOSE ON SARAH

as she slowly looks from Jack to Jake. Jake smiles.

			JAKE
	He hates takeoffs.

Before Sarah can ask why, Jake opens the throttles.

EXTERIOR - ON THE GOOSE

as she slowly accelerates across the lagoon. It isn't exactly the most
impressive takeoff roll you'll ever see.

INT. ACROSS JAKE AND SARAH

Sarah's eyes dart from the windshield to Jake, who is inching the
throttles further and further forward. The Goose surges a bit and begins
to slap the small waves of the lagoon.

			JAKE
		(without looking at her)
	Can you swim?

			SARAH
	Why?

			JAKE
	Just curious.

Sarah looks back forward.

SARAH'S POINT OF VIEW - THE LAGOON

In the distance we cn see the breakers pounding across the reef. They are
headed straight for it.

BACK ON BOTH

Sarah turns to Jake to ask him about the reef, but before she can, he
jerks the control yoke back and forth...trying to break the Goose loose
from the suction of the water.

EXTERIOR - ON THE GOOSE

It seems to waddle in slow motion across the lagoon toward the reef.

INT. COCKPIT - ON BOTH

as Jake slams the yoke in and out...the throttles now all the way to the
fire wall.

			JAKE
		(to the Goose)
	Come on, baby. Come on.

ON THE HULL

as it slaps through the water.

ON THE ENGINES

straining at full throttle, threatening to fly apart.

ON THE REEF

as the waves crash across the coral. The Goose is only a few hundred
meters away and still in the water.

ON THE GOOSE

She breaks free of the water for a few seconds trailing a plume of white
spray, then settles back in again.

ON JACK

as he nestles deeper into his parachute and life jacket.

CLOSE ON JAKE AND SARAH

He is total concentration. Sarah looks to him and there's no longer fear
in her eyes...there's excitement!

			JAKE
	Come on baby...Fly! _Fly_!

ACROSS THE REEF - ON THE GOOSE

as she bounces out of the water within twenty meters of the reef and roars
over camera climbing up into the blue Pacific sky.

BACK ON JAKE AND SARAH

Jake is trimming the Goose, acting as if the takeoff was quite routine.
Sarah has recovered enough to....

			SARAH
		(breathless)
	You coulda killed us!

			JAKE
	Yah, I coulda...but I didn't.

Jack trots up from the cargo hold and takes his position between them,
acting as if nothing had happened. Sarah stares at the two of them.

ON THE GOOSE

as it climbs away through the first puffy white clouds above the island.

EXT. WHARF - CLOSE ON SAM

He is watching the Goose fly away, a slight smile on his bruised face.

			MONOCLE'S VOICE
	Do you have a match?

Sam turns to discover Monocle standing beside him. Sam stares at him a
beat, then....

			SAM
	Sure.

He pulls a match and snaps the head with his thumbnail. As the match
flares....

CLOSE ON MONOCLE'S HAND

We hear a metallic click as the glinting blade of a German commando
knife drops down into his hand. The hand lunges forward.

BACK - CLOSE ON SAM AND MONOCLE

Sam's eyes widen in surprise. His mouth opens to speak, but nothing
comes out. As he slides down out of frame we move in tight on Monocle
who takes the still burning match from Sam's hand and calmly lights his
cigarette.

			_ACT TWO_

FADE IN

EXT. JAPANESE GARDENS - DRAGON LADY'S ESTATE - DAY

A white-robed Japanese monk trots across the high-arched moon bridge
and up the gravel path to the sacred bell atop the hill. There, he
strikes the heavy bronze bell with the suspended wooden bole, sending a
deep booming peal echoing across the cherry-blossomed hills.

					CUT TO

EXTERIOR - CLOSE ON HORSES' HOOVES

as they pound down a dirt road at the gallop. We can hear the bell
resounding in the distance. The camera pans up to reveal a party of 19th
Century Japanese warriors escorting an Oriental ship captain and a tall,
blond European dressed in the uniform of a German Army Colonel. This
is Willie.

ON THE ESCORT

as their horses slide to a halt in front of the gate to the Dragon Lady's
estate. Hostlers run up and grab the reins as the escorts dismounts in
the billowing dust.

CLOSE ON WILLIE

He slaps the dust from his uniform, adjusts his hat, tucks his briefcase
under his arm and strides forward into the slate courtyard.

COURTYARD - ON TODO

an impressive Japansese Samurai with a shaved head who stands waiting at
the other end of the courtyard. As Willie strides up to Todo....

			TODO
		(undisguised disgust)
	You are late.

			WILLIE
		(German accent)
It was your boat that brought me, Todo.

Todo stares at him a beat, then shouts an order in Japanese to the two
warriors from the escort party who are still at the other end of the
courtyard. They shout "hai" and turn to the ship's captain.

CLOSE ON WILLIE

He turns and glances back down the courtyard, his expression turning from
curiousity to shock.

			WILLIE
	Mein Gott!

WILLIE'S POINT OF VIEW - THE SHIP'S CAPTAIN

as he kneels before a Samurai warrior with a raised sword. As the sword
comes down....

BACK ON WILLIE AND TODO

Todo nods with satisfaction.

			TODO
He will never be late again.

With that, he spins on his heel and strides into the estate. We hold on
Willie's horrified expression until he finally turns and follows Todo.

EXT. DRAGON LADY'S ESTATE

as Todo strides up to the large Japanese house. Willie, a bit pale, is
almost running to catch up. At the enterance, Todo steps out of his shoes
and inside. Willie struggles for a bit with the heavy jack boots,
eventually gets them off and hurries after him.

INT. PRINCESS KOJI'S BATHHOUSE - DAY - CLOSE ON COBRA

as it sways back and forth, a red ribbon tied around its neck just below
the fully extended hood. A handsome Japanese warrior, clad in white
shorts and a headband emblazoned with Princess Koji's emblem, appears
circling the cobra. His body glistens with sweat in the steam-filled room
as he attempts to snatch the ribbon from the cobra's neck.

Intercut with:

PRINCESS KOJI

immersed in a huge hot tub, attended by two hand maidens and calmly
sipping saki as she watches the deadly match with a slight smile of
pleasure on her lips. Suddenly the cobra strikes and misses. The hand
maidens visibly jump with the strike, but the Princess doesn't even blink.
Now the young warrior lunges for the ribbon, the cobra strikes...both miss
and the circling goes on. A gong strikes and the Princess looks to....

CLOSE ON SHOGI SCREEN

as the part, revealing Todo in a low bow.

			TODO
		(in Japanese)
Honorable Princess...the German Pig has arrived.

			PRINCESS KOJI
		(in Japanese)
	Show him in.

Todo raises up and steps aside. Willie appears, a smile fixed upon his
face. He is surprised to find the Princess in a hot tub, and pleased,
until he sees the warrior and the cobra.

			WILLIE
	What are they doing?

			TODO
	Is a test.

			WILLIE
	A test?

			TODO
To become a Koji warrior, one must pass many tests...this is but
	one.

			PRINCESS KOJI
		(seductively)
Not all my tests are so...difficult. Some are actually quite
	pleasurable.
		(beat)
	Would you like some saki?

Willie nods and a hand maiden brings him a saki which he tosses down
and holds out for a refill. During this the warrrior lunges again and
misses. The circling match continues.

			PRINCESS KOJI
Your message said you wanted an interview to discuss a venture
	of mutual importance.

Willie turns to the Princess.

			WILLIE
You have heard of the Legend of the Gold Monkey?

			PRINCESS KOJI
Don't tell me that little paperhanger in Berlin has fallen for that
	one?

			WILLIE
		(stiffens)
Princess Koji, I am a loyal German officer. While I do not
indulge in politics, neither can I stand idly by while the leader of
	my country is insulted.

			PRINCESS KOJI
		(sipping saki)
One must do what one must do.

Willie looks at Todo, whose hand is to his sword.

			WILLIE
	I must protest...most vigorously.

The Princess laughs...it is the cold laugh of the cobra.

			PRINCESS KOJI
	Your protest is accepted.

			WILLIE
		(relieved)
	Good.
		(beat)
Now, you know of the Legend?

			PRINCESS KOJI
I know somewhere in the Marivellas there is supposed to be a
gold idol as big as a house, guarded by giant monkeys. There is
also supposed to be a tribe of Zulus with the treasure from King
Solomon's mines, and the lost Ark of the Covenant and....

			WILLIE
		(interrupting)
German Intelligence believes the Legend of the Gold Monkey to
	be true.
(pulls papers and hands them to her)
These are the decoded reports of two German officers, posing as
Dutch artists, who were here in the Marivellas seeking the idol.
They vanished, exploring and island they thought might be
	inhabited by giant monkeys.

			TODO
	Which island?

			WILLIE
I don't know that yet. Berlin is sending me that information by a
	secret courier.

ANOTHER ANGLE

as the warrior makes another feint at the cobra which lashes out and
misses. Willie edges a little closer to the hot tub.

			PRINCESS KOJI
Willie, despite your act, I know you're not stupid. If this huge
Gold Monkey exists and we find it...I shall keep it.

			WILLIE
		(smiles)
Even if Der Fuhrer would pay you five times what it's worth as
	gold?

			PRINCESS KOJI
Now, why would Hitler do that?

			WILLIE
According to legend, the gold idol survived the fire of a volcano.

			PRINCESS KOJI
	You believe that?

			WILLIE
A thousand years ago the Tse-sing monks who supposedly cast
the idol knew the secret of blending gold with other metals to
make it impregnable to heat. Germany needs such an alloy.

			PRINCESS KOJI
	For what?

			WILLIE
Rockets...capable of hurtling bombs from one end of the Earth to
the other! The only thing we lack at the moment is a metal
capable of withstanding the heat generated by our fuels.

			PRINCESS KOJI
	Five times its gold value?

			WILLIE
	Jah.

			PRINCESS KOJI
And if this idol doesn't exist?

			WILLIE
One million reichmarks for your trouble.

			PRINCESS KOJI
		(after a beat)
	Willie...you have a deal.

ON THE WARRIOR AND THE COBRA

He lunges one more time and misses. The cobra doesn't. Struck on the
arm, the yound warrior staggers back, mortally wounded. He manages a
bow to Princess Koji and then collapses in the arms of the guards. As
they drag him out....

CLOSE ON WILLIE

He is going to be ill. Beside him, Princess Koji rises, her hand maidens
wrapping her with towels.

			PRINCESS KOJI
	Too bad.
		(beat)
I would have enjoyed seeing how he did in my next test.

Willie looks to her, she smiles down on him...a cold deadly smile.

CLOSE ON THE COBRA

hissing and erect...waiting its next challenger.

EXT. GOOSE - DAY - CRUISING THROUGH THE CLOUDS

passing in and out of the great white cotton puffs.

			SARAH'S VOICE
		(in the middle)
...after England and France it was all downhill.

INT. COCKPIT - ACROSS JAKE AND SARAH

He seems totally relaxed, but he's intently watching the sky ahead as
Sarah sort of prattles on. Jack is asleep on the deck between them.

			SARAH
		(continuing)
Sam booked me into half the gin mills from Marseilles to New
	Delhi.

			JAKE
	Why'd you go?

			SARAH
Wanted to see the world before it gets blown to hell.
		(off his glance)
War's coming. Everyone knows it, even the isolationists. They
	just pretend they don't.
		(beat)
What about you. Why are your out here?

			JAKE
First thing to learn about the islands is not to ask a man his last
name. Second is, not to ask where he's from and third....

			SARAH
		(cuts in)
...why he's here in the first place.

He glances at Sarah, smiles, then resumes studying the horizon. After a
beat....

			JAKE
You figured out how you're gonna get a ticket on the clipper with
	only five bucks?

			SARAH
	I'll manage.
		(off his look)
Hey! I mean, Sam'll be cooled off by the time that boat gets him
to Boragora. He and I may be quits, but he owes me at least a
	ticket home.

			JAKE
		(shakes head)
	He's not gonna make it.

Sarah looks at Jake, a touch alarmed.

			SARAH
	What?

			JAKE
	In time.
		(explaining)
It's a two-day boat ride from Tagataya to Boragora. The clipper
	takes off at dawn tomorrow.

			SARAH
	Well, when's the next clipper?

			JAKE
A week. But she'll be flying west. The next eastbound clipper
won't be along for two weeks.

			SARAH
Two weeks! You mean I'll be stuck on Boragora with no dough
	for two weeks!

			JAKE
	Looks that way.

			SARAH
	Oh, boy....

			JAKE
I don't know how well you can sing, but you're a redhead and
	American...out here that's worth something.
		(beat)
I can probably get you a job singing at the Monkey Bar.

			SARAH
	Monkey Bar....

			JAKE
Yah. Run by a friend of mine...Louie.

			SARAH
	No last name, right.

			JAKE
Right. Everybody just calls him Bon Chance Louie.

			SARAH
	Lucky Louie?

			JAKE
	Yah.
		(sits ups slowly)
Had a date with the guillotine once and lived to talk about it.

He taps the throttles slightly forward. The drone of the two Pratt and
Whitney's increases in pitch.

CLOSE ON JACK

His ears immediately prick up, even in sleep.

BACK ACROSS JAKE AND SARAH

Jake has taken a firmer grip on the control yoke. Sarah still doesn't
realize anything might be wrong. Jack does. He sits up and looks out the
cockpit window.

			SARAH
You mean...someone tried to cut his head off?

			JAKE
Yah. The French Government. Only something went wrong with
the guillotine and they had to let him go. Sort of an unwritten
	French law.
		(beat)
	Fasten your seat belt, please.

			SARAH
		(turns to look out)
	Are we there?

SARAH'S POINT OF VIEW - THUNDERSTORMS

...a solid wall of them as far as the eye can see, climbing far higher
than the Goose can ever go.

			SARAH'S VOICE
	Oh...oh!

BACK ON ALL

The first slight bumps of turbulence shake the Goose.

			JAKE
	Don't worry.
		(beat)
It'll get a little bumpy, but that's all.
		(looks at Jack)
	Right, Jack?

Jack look sat him, turns and walks back to the rear of the plane.

ON JACK

as he passes the monkey and snuggles between the parachute and life
jacket.

CLOSE ON SARAH

She turns from Jack to Jake. The look on her face is one of concern.

EXTERIOR - ON THE GOOSE

as it enters the leading edge of the thunderstorms.

TIGHT ON COCKPIT

Sarah is braced. Jake has one hand on the dual throttles and the other on
the yoke as the Goose bounces all over the sky.

CARGO HOLD

The monkey is hanging from the top of his cage, swinging with the
turbulence and screeching his head off. Jack is snuggled in nice and
tight.

BACK ON JAKE AND SARAH

The engines are roaring as they plow deeper into the storm. Outside the
cockpit the sky is black. Rain pelts the windows. A jagged lightning
bolt flashes, blinding them for an instant. Jake glances at Sarah who's
terrified.

			JAKE
		(shouts over noise)
Just a couple of minutes more and....

He doesn't get to finish. The port engine misfires.

ON PORT ENGINE

coughing and sputtering as black smoke belches out the exhaust.

ON JAKE

as, fighting to hold the Goose in the air, he goes through the standard
engine-out procedure. Sarah is scared, but smart enough to keep her mouth
shut. The rain continues to pound the aluminum skin of the Goose like
pellets.

CLOSE ON ALTIMETER

winding down through 3000 feet.

ON THE GOOSE

as Jake feathers the prop on the port engine.

ACROSE JAKE AND SARAH

He's got full power on the starboard engine, but the Goose is still
dropping.

			JAKE
		(shouts)
I can't hold her in the air with all this weight! You'll have to
	dump the cargo.

			SARAH
	Me?

			JAKE
		(fighting the controls)
Unless you'd rather do the flying.

MOVING WITH SARAH

She unbuckles and fighting to maintain her balance in the tossing Goose,
works her way through the cargo hold to the rear door. She opens it. The
noise is incredible. Rain streaks horizontally past the hatch as bursts
of lightning illuminate the black heart of the storm. Sarah reaches for
the nearest crate...the Bibles. She hesitates. Moves past it and grabs
the crate of champagne instead.

CLOSE ON JAKE

watching Sarah. As she tosses the champagne out first, he turns back
forward and shakes his head. A huge bolt of lightning slams past the nose
of the Goose.

			JAKE
		(to God)
I agree. Booze first. Bibles last.

He looks at the altimeter.

CLOSE ON ALTIMETER

It unwinds past 2000 feet.

ON THE GOOSE

dropping through the clouds, boxes flying out the cargo hatch into the
storm.

ON JACK

watching Sarah at work.

ON SARAH

tossing out the French pates and tins. She is soaking wet, dress
plastered to her body, hair flying in the wind...in other words,
beautiful.

			JAKE'S VOICE
		(shouting)
More! You got to get rid of more!

She looks around. The only things left are the Bibles, her two suitcases,
the monkey and Jack. She pushes the first crate of Bibles to the door.

ON JAKE

watching her. Just as she tosses the Bibles out, he turns forward to
see....

JAKE'S POINT OF VIEW - TWIN VOLCANIC PEAKS

as they appear out of the storm directly in front of the Goose.

ON THE GOOSE

Jake banks hard and flying between the peaks, which are instantly
swallowed up by the storm.

SARAH

has been tossed across the cargo hold and into the bulkhead. She lies
there, stunned. Jack is to her side. He licks her face. As she starts
to come around, Jack grabs one of her suitcases by the handle and drags it
toward the hatch.

			SARAH
		(seeing Jack)
	Jack! No!

She struggles to her feet and checks the weight of her two suitcases, then
throws the light one out and stashes the heavier one in the corner. Even
Jack doesn't understand that.

ON ALTIMETER

as it unwinds past 1000 feet.

			JAKE'S VOICE
		(shouting)
	We're still dropping!

BACK ON SARAH

Only Jack, the monkey and her suitcase are left. She looks at the monkey,
who screeches. She grabs his cage. Opens it. Takes the terrified monkey
out, and tosses the cage. Then she closes the cargo hatch and works back
towards the cockpit.

ON COCKPIT

Jake is still struggling to hold the Goose in the air as Sarah straps
herself in, holding the monkey.

			SARAH
	Everything's out...but the animals and....

They flash out of the storm clouds and over a rain-pelted beach. Sarah
twists in her seat to look back at the beach disappearing behind them.

			SARAH
	Turn back!

			JAKE
Can't. The Goose would stall in a turn! Got to keep flying
	straight.

ON THE ALTIMETER

as it winds down through 100 feet.

ON THE OCEAN

as the storm-tossed waves break, their tops blowing into white froth.
Suddenly the Goose roars over on one engine, fifty feet off the
water...still dropping.

					FADE OUT

			_END OF ACT TWO_

			_ACT THREE_

FADE IN

EXT. DOCK AT BORAGORA - DAY - WIDE ON CORKY

pacing towards the end of the long wooden pier. The Pan Am clipper lies
at anchor in the lagoon and on the horizon storm clouds block the setting
sun.

CLOSER

Corky is thirty-one, sprouting a week's growth of beard and dressed in a
rumpled white suite, French fisherman's cap and worn wing tip shoes. He
pulls a soiled handkerchief and wipes the sweat from his face. He looks a
bit like a young Thomas Mitchell. He also looks scared.

			CORKY
		(mumbling to himself)
I warned him. Don't fly the Goose to Tagataya. Starboard
carburetor won't take it. But does he listen to Corky? No. I'm
	only his mechanic!

He stops at the end of the pier and scans the sky towards the storm.

			CORKY
Serve him right if he's down in that sea with the sharks!

He turns and starts pacing back towards the other end of the dock.

REVERSE ANGLE

We see the town at the end of the dock. A typical island settlement with
the French flag flying over the two-story hotel with a colonnade. The
Monkey Bar is in this hotel. At the other end of town is a small
whitewashed church with a thatched roof. A number of warehouses about the
shoreline, some emblazoned with The Dragon Lady's symbol. Her sampans and
inter-island cats are evident among the many boats in the lagoon.

CLOSER ON CORKY

as he suddenly stops and turns, looking out to sea. He strains his ears.
After a beat, we hear it, too...the distant throb of an engine fading in
and out on the tropical breeze. Corky breaks into a run back to the end
of the dock where he strains his eyes towards the horizon.

					SMASH CUT TO

THE GOOSE

as she roars in over the reef on one engine, ten feet off the deck. She
flies past the Pan Am clipper, then gently flairs and settles into the
lagoon with a splash and a trailing stream of white water.

ON CORKY

waiting at the end of the dock as the Goose taxis up. He grabs a line and
ties her to the pier. Jake kills the starboard engine and Corky opens the
rear cargo hatch. Jack comes trotting out past Corky.

			CORKY
		(all smiles)
Boy am I glad to see you...
		(sees the eye patch)
Oh, Jack. He lost it again, huh.

Jack barks twice and continues down the dock.

			JAKE'S VOICE
	He's lying.

ANOTHER ANGLE - FEATURING JAKE

as he climbs out on the wing carrying a tool box. He walks to the port
engine and begins unsnapping the cowling. Corky joins him.

			CORKY
I told you that starboard carburetor needed rebuilding.

			JAKE
	Corky....

			CORKY
		(blasting on)
Told you it wouldn't hold to Tagataya and back!

			JAKE
	Corky....

			CORKY
		(still blasting on)
But do you listen to me? No!
		(beat)
Besides that, you lost Jack's eye again!

			SARAH'S VOICE
	Which eye?

ON SARAH

as she steps out of the hatch, the monkey clinging to her. Corky is
surprised. He leans into Jake.

			CORKY
		(whisper)
	Who's she?

			JAKE
	Name's Sarah.

Corky gives her the once over, he's not sure whether he likes her or not.

			SARAH
	Which eye?

CLOSE ON CORKY

He starts to tell her, but can't remember. He puts his hand over his
right eye, then his left. He turns and looks down the dock.

CORKY'S POINT OF VIEW - JACK

A couple of dogs lying at the end of the dock scatter as Jack trots
through them. We can't tell from the rear which eye the patch is on.

BACK ON ALL

Corky finally turns back to Sarah and....

			CORKY
	His left.

			SARAH
		(shakes her head)
His right. But I won't tell Jack you couldn't remember.

			CORKY
		(trying to recover)
Oh. I...I remembered. I was just testing you.

			SARAH
	Did I pass?

Corky blinks, then grins.

			CORKY
	Yah.

			SARAH
		(smiles)
Swell! Then we'll celebrate. I'll grab my stuff and buy you a
	beer.

She lets the monkey drop to the dock and reenters the hatch.

CLOSER ON JAKE AND CORKY

Jake goes back to work on the engine.

			CORKY
		(enthused)
	I like her, Jake.

			JAKE
You like anyone who buys the beer.

			CORKY
		(trying to recall)
That reminds me, there's something I gotta tell you.
		(thinking)
I told you about the starboard carburetor....

			JAKE
		(shakes his head)
Corky. Which engine am I working on?

			CORKY
		(automatically)
	Port.

Corky blinks, looks across at the starboard engine which was running when
the Goose landed and finally it hits him.

			CORKY
	Jake! The starboard carburetor held!

			JAKE
That's right. The port engine quit.
		(beat)
You sure it was the starboard carburetor that needed rebuilding?

			CORKY
		(blinks)
I wouldn't make a mistake like that, Jake. Honest.

			JAKE
		(after a beat)
	No, you wouldn't, Corky.

Corky smiles with relief.

			SARAH'S VOICE
Hey. Someone give me a hand.

ANOTHER ANGLE - ON ALL

Jake's eyes widen at the sight of Sarah struggling to lift her heavy
suitcase out of the hatch. Corky runs to help her with the suitcase; he
can barely lift it.

			JAKE
	You didn't dump that!

			SARAH
You think I'm gonna be stuck in the South Pacific with only the
clothes on my back, mister, you're crazy.

			JAKE
That suitcase coulda made the difference between staying in the air
	or going in the drink.

			SARAH
		(using his line)
	It coulda...but, it didn't.

With that she turns and walks after Corky, who's lugging the suitcase down
the dock. The monkey screeches and scampers after Sarah.

CLOSE ON JAKE

He glares after Sarah for a beat, then muttering to himself, attacks,
disconnecting the carburetor with a vengeance. He pulls it out of the
engine and starts tearing it down.

CLOSE ON CARBURETOR

The filter, line and internal orifices are all gummed up with some sort of
resin.

CLOSE ON JAKE

as he fingers the gummy substance...knowing it didn't get there by
accident.

			JAKE
		(quietly)
	Damn.

					CUT TO

INT. MONKEY BAR - DAY - CLOSE ON CARVED MONKEY

Its fangs bared in a silent scream. We widen to reveal it as one of a
tribe of monkeys, intricately carved into a teakwood backbar, doing
everything from eating to sleeping. In front of this museum-quality piece
stands Bon Chance Louie. A dapper Frenchman in his fifties who has a
nervous habit of gingerly rubbing the back of his neck which is always
covered with a red bandana. At the moment, however, Louie is beaming, for
beneath the slow-turning fans the bamboo tables are packed with Europeans
from the clipper who must spend the night. Most are wearing Panama suits
and muted ties...all are characters out of a Somerset Maugham play. A
native is pounding out "As Time Goes By" on the upright piano in the
corner, but his efforts can barely be heard over the chatter of a half-
dozen languages each shouting louder than the other in an attempt to be
understood. Into this smoke-filled menagerie comes....

JACK

trotting beneath the swinging doors and straight to the bar. Louie spots
him and breaks into a smile, which fades as Jack comes closer.

			LOUIE
		(French accent)
Ah, Jacques, mon ami...he lost it again!

Jack barks twice as Louie pours some beer in a bowl and Jack laps it up,
Corky and Sarah enter. Corky drops the suitcase at the bar with a thud
and Sarah winces.

			CORKY
	Louie. Two beers!

Louie motions for the barman to pour two beers. Then catching Sarah's eye
he automatically rubs his neck...a motion which is not lost on Sarah.

			LOUIE
Aren't you going to introduce me to your friend?

Corky, licking his lips at the sight of the beer being poured, is puzzled
until he realizes Louie's referring to Sarah.

			CORKY
		(embarrassed)
Oh, sure. Sorry. Louie...this is Sarah. She's a...ah....

Sarah smiles and extends a hand to Louie, to shake.

			SARAH
	Just passing through.

			LOUIE
		(kissing her hand)
	Enchante.

Sarah doesn't know if he's sincere or not, but Corky thinks it's great as
he smiles and wipes the foam from his lips.

ON THE MONKEY

Louie sees it for the first time as it scampers up the backbar to join its
woodcarved cousins.

			LOUIE
		(beaming)
	Jake got him!
		(to monkey)
Hey little fella...come to Papa Louie.

Corky suddenly looks concerned and puts his beer down, an unusual act
seeing as it's still half-full.

CORKY'S POINT OF VIEW - A RATHER LARGE MAN

standing just inside the door of the Monkey Bar, watching the street.
He's dressed in a white Panama suit that had to be special made to fit his
enormous frame.

			CORKY'S VOICE
		Oh, oh.

BACK ON BAR

Corky starts across the crowded room towards the door as Louie continues
to entice the monkey with bits of food and Sarah just looks confused.
Finally....

			SARAH
		(to Louie)
	What's going on?

			LOUIE
	Jake's been...too American, again.
		(off her look)
He's a sucker for the pretty leg and the sob story. That Gargantuan
by the door has a very sexy wife who hired Jake ot find her husband.
They spent the past week flying all over the islands looking for
	him.

			SARAH
		(nods knowingly)
And he didn't want to be found.

			LOUIE
He showed up this afternoon on the Clipper. It seems she is the one
who didn't want to be found.

The monkey jumps onto Louie's shoulder, who turns to Sarah, who turns to
the door in time to see....

JAKE

comes through the swinging door, carburetor in hand, a worried expression
on his face. The big man reaches out and stops him.

			GARGANTUAN
	Jake Cutter?

			JAKE
	Yah.

Corky reaches them.

			CORKY
Jake. I just remembered what I had to tell ya.

			JAKE
		(to Corky)
	What?

The Gargantuan slugs Jake knocking him back through the swinging doors and
into the street.

EXTERIOR - ON JAKE

lying in the dirt, stunned. Corky is out of the bar a step ahead of the
Gargantuan.

			CORKY
That's Bobbi's husband. And guess what, Jake. He wasn't lost at
	all!

Jake looks at Corky in disbelief.

ANGLE ON JAKE

as Gargantuan pulls him to his feet.

			JAKE
	You're Bobbi's husband?

He grunts a "yes".

			JAKE
What are you mad at me for? All I did was fly your wife around the
	islands trying to find you!

			GARGANTUAN
	I wasn't lost.

			JAKE
		(catching on)
	I think I can explain....

Jake doesn't get a chance. Gargantuan clobbers him, knocking him back
into the crowd. Jake shakes the cobwebs from his head and moves back
toward the Gargantuan with a determined look.

			JAKE
	Okay...I won't explain.

He throws a tremendous right to Gargantuan's chin. It's like hitting a
concrete wall. It doesn't even move the big guy.

CLOSE ON JAKE

He looks to Corky in disbelief.

ON CORKY

He looks scared to death

BACK ON GARGANTUAN

as he grabs Jake and throws him through the swinging doors.

INT. MONKEY BAR

as Jake flies through the doors and slams into the sawdust covered floor.
Everyone is cheering and betting. Evidently this sort of thing is quite
common in the Monkey Bar. We move in on Jake who weakly raises his head.

JAKE'S POINT OF VIEW - ON JACK

sitting next to Sarah, watching the fight. We tilt up to Sarah's face,
she looks like she wants to help, in fact. She reaches with her toe and
shoves the carburetor to Jake's outstretched arm.

BACK ON JAKE

He glances with glazed eyes to where Sarah's looking. The carburetor is
lying there, a few inches from his outstretched arm.

ON GARGANTUAN AND CORKY

as they come back through the swinging doors with Corky trying to talk the
big man out of doing anymore damage to Jake.

			CORKY
		(very fast)
Jake didn't know Bobbi was running from you. How could he? All
Bobbi ever said to Jake was how lonely she was without her husband.
Every night, she'd be up in Jake's room....

The big man growls with rage, pushes Corky aside, and drags Jake to his
feet by the nap of his flight jacket.

ANOTHER ANGLE

He's about to whack Jake in the face again when Jake beats him to it...a
roundhouse to the guy's chin with the carburetor. The big man goes down
like a toppled redwood. The piano player breaks into an off-key version
of "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy" and the crowd either cheers or groans
depending on their bet.

MOVING WITH JAKE

as Corky helps him to the bar.

			CORKY
		(nervous)
I tried to warn you, didn't I, Jake. Soon as I remembered I told
	you.

They reach the bar and Jake plops the carburetor on it then eases onto a
stool. Louie puts a bottle of whishkey in front of him.

			LOUIE
You're getting smarter, Jake. Learning to fight like a Frenchman.

			SARAH
		(wincing at his face)
	You look awful.

Jake stares at each of them in turn, then looks down at Jack.

			JAKE
Don't you have anything to say?

Jack barks...one.

			CORKY
		(still nervous)
That means he doesn't, Jake. See one bark means no and two....

			JAKE
		(losing his temper)
	Corky!

			CORKY
		(innocent)
	What Jake?

			JAKE
		(getting control)
	Can I have your beer?

			CORKY
	Oh, sure, Jake. Sure.

Jake picks up the beer and downs it. Then uses a napkin and the whiskey
to clean his cuts.

ON THE GARGANTUAN

as the native waiters drage the big man out through the swinging doors.

BACK ON THE GROUP AT THE BAR

as they watch the big man being carried out.

			JAKE
		(dabbing at cut)
Louie, can you ice King Kong over there so he doesn't kill me.

			LOUIE
Oui. He'll spend the night in jail and have his passport returned
in time to catch the Clipper in the morning.

			JAKE
	Merci, Louie.

			LOUIE
		(in French)
	You're welcome.

			SARAH
		(surprised)
	How can you do that?

			CORKY
Louie's the Magistrate de Justice for the islands, ain't you, Louie.

			LOUIE
		(modestly)
	Just the French ones.

			SARAH
		(shocked)
But...I thought the French tried to....

Louie unconsciously adjusts the scarf around his neck.

			LOUIE
	To what?

Sarah looks to Jake...did he make the guillotine story up?

CLOSE ON JAKE

dabbing his cuts, acting as if he doesn't have the foggiest idea why Sarah
seems confused.

ON JACK

His hackles go up and he begins to growl at someone who's just entered the
bar.

BACK ON ALL - FEATURE JAKE

as they look to see who Jack is growling at.

			JAKE
		(sarcastic to Jack)
Good dog. You watch that ape tear me apart but you bark at the
	preacher.

CLOSE ON TIKI AND REVEREND TENBOOM

She is a beautiful island girl with dark eyes and even darker hair,
wearing a huge cross on the end of a beaded necklace, which instead of
inspiring piety, only serves to accentuate her breasts. Walking a step
ahead of her is the man she worships -- the Reverend Tenboom. Even in his
black minister's suit we recognize him as Willie, the German army officer.

INT. MONKEY BAR - DAY - ON WILLIE

as he stands before Jake and the others. Jack is still growling. Willie
looks at Jack and forces an understanding smile.

			WILLIE
I see you lost the poor animal's eye, again.

			JAKE
		(trying to change subject)
Ah...Sarah, this is the Reverend Tenboom. He's...saving the natives
from committing original sin. Sarah flew in from Tagataya with me,
	Reverend.

Willie shakes Sarah's hand, she isn't sure she likes it.

			WILLIE
The you came protected by God's word.

			SARAH
	I did?

			TIKI
That Reverend's way of saying Bible.

			WILLIE
		(forced smile)
Tiki. Why don't you prepare the church for evening vespers.

			TIKI
	I'd rather prepare for blessing....

Jake and Louie exchange glances while Willie stiffens slightly. Sarah's
just confused.

			WILLIE
All in God's good time, my child.

			TIKI
		(smiles)
Okay, I go prepare church first.

She turns and runs out.

			WILLIE
		(old forced smile)
They are so simple...so pure. Much like Adam and Eve must have been
in the garden. It is our sacred duty to preserve such innocence.

			SARAH
Oh, those were your bibles we lost.

			WILLIE
		(paling)
	Lost?

			SARAH
		(sadly)
	We had to dump them.

			WILLIE
		(losing it)
	You dumped my bibles!

			LOUIE
		(equally aghast)
Why would you do such a thing?

			JAKE
It was the only way I could stay in the air on one engine.

			CORKY
		(rambling)
Jake's right. The Goose can't lift more than 3600 pounds on one
engine. And she weighs nearly 3100 dry. Then there's Jake's
weight, Jack's, the fuel, Sarah. That would be about....

As he tries to add the total in his head....

			LOUIE
My pate. My truffles. Mon Dieu! My champagne!

			CORKY
		(has the total)
	...400 pounds and...
		(hefts Sarah's suitcase)
...Sarah's suitcase must be near fifty...you barely made it!

			LOUIE
		(astounded)
You saved your suitcase and threw out my 1927 Pom Peron.

			SARAH
		(weakly)
It made sense at the time.
		(off thier looks)
It's not exactly hopeless. There's a chance we can recover some of
it. We dumped most of the cargo over an island.

			WILLIE/LOUIE
	What island?

			JAKE
	Baku.

Their expectant faces both turn sour at the same time. Sarah looks from
them to Jake.

			SARAH
	What's wrong with Baku?

			JAKE
Nothing. If you like walking around on a live volcano.

			CORKY
Blows every year about this time. No one goes near it.

			JAKE
And that includes me. Insurance'll replace the cargo, Louie, but
	not me.
		(beat)
Come on, Corky, we got work to do.

Jake picks up the carburetor and heads for the door. Corky tosses down
the rest of his beer and ambles after him. So does Jack. We hold on the
downcast faces of the group that's left, even the monkey seems sad.

EXT. MONKEY BAR - DAY

Outside, under the veranda, Jake hands Corky the carburetor and lights a
cigar.

			JAKE
	Whatta you make of that?

Corky examines it, then looks up in surprise.

			CORKY
	Someone sugared the gas.

			JAKE
Yah. That's what I figured. Thank God it was only in the port
	tank.

			CORKY
	Jake....

			JAKE
No. Corky, I don't know why.

Louie and Willie come out.

After a beat, Willie goes down the street looking very glum. Louie joins
Jake and Corky.

			LOUIE
Jake, I've been thinking. Going to Baku would in a way be doing
God's work...I mean finding the bibles.

			JAKE
Louie, I was doing God's work hauling 'em here and I almost went in
the drink. Besides, hunting for your goodies isn't exactly my idea
	of....

			LOUIE
		(interrupts)
	No, no, no, no.
		(beat)
But...if while looking for the bibles, you found a little
pate...perhaps a bottle or two of the Pom Peron...don't think the
	Lord would mind.

			JAKE
		(firm)
	No

			LOUIE
		(low whisper)
Jake. I don't like to mention this but you owe me three months back
rent on the room and Corky's bar bill is longer than the Reverend's
	face.

Jake's thinking.

			LOUIE
I'll even give you two hundred dollars in credit.

			JAKE
	Three fifty.

			LOUIE
	Three fifty?

			JAKE
	Cash...American.

			CORKY
		(smiles)
It's what we need to get Jack's eye back, right.

Jack barks twice.

			JAKE
And I want you to give Sarah a job singing in the bar.

			LOUIE
Mon Dieu does it never end!
		(after a beat)
	Can she sing?

Jake shrugs.

			LOUIE
Oh, well, she's a redhead and American and it was a very special Pom
	Peron.

Louie shrugs and extends his hand. Jake shakes on it and we....

EXT. LAGOON AT BORAGORA - NIGHT - ESTABLISHING

It's a beautiful moonlit night in the tropics. We can make out details as
if it were day -- sampans in the harbor, Pam Am clipper riding quietly at
anchor, even the distant break of surf over the reef. The only electric
light in sight is a naked bulb at the end of the long wooden pier where
the Goose is tied up.

MOVING IN ON THE GOOSE

Corky has pulled the port engine cowling and has parts strewn all over the
planks. He's cleaning them in a bucket of gasoline as Jack sits beside
him, watching.

			CORKY
		(philosophically)
I dunno, Jack. Seems to me Jake's doing everything he can to get
your eye back. It's not his fault he can't find it.

CLOSE ON JACK

He rubs his eye patch with his paw and barks twice.

			CORKY
		(chastising)
	Come on...be fair.

INT. GOOSE COCKPIT - CLOSE ON JAKE

The only light is a dim red glow from the instrument panel. Beyond him,
out the side cockpit window, we can see Corky and Jack on the dock. We
come in on the middle of Jake's radio transmission....

			JAKE
...The Frenchman said he sold it to a Boson on the Hancock.

EXT. DESTROYER HANCOCK - NIGHT - ESTABLISHING - STOCK

as the old three-stacker plows through the gentle swells of the South
Pacific.

			JAKE'S VOICE
		(continuing)
An old timer with no nose bone. Thought his name was Wilson or
	Winslow.

INT. HANCOCK RADIO SHACK - NIGHT

A young radio operator tunes in the low frequency radio with huge glowing
output tubes. It's 1938, so of course, he's known as...Sparks.

			SPARKS
No Nose Winslow. He's our gunnery chief.

BACK ON JAKE

as he sits up in the cockpit.

			JAKE
Great! I gotta talk to him.

CLOSE ON CORKY AND JACK

Across them in the b.g. we can see Jake in the cockpit.

			CORKY
Remember that time in '37 when Jake lost your eye to that Chinese
bandit and he flew all the way to Tibet in a snow storm to get it
	back?

Jack barks twice...reluctantly.

			CORKY
He'll get it, again. You gotta have faith, Jack.

					CUT TO

INT. REVEREND TENBOOM'S ROOM - NIGHT - CLOSE ON BIBLE

as it is laid down on the bamboom dresser.

			CORKY'S VOICE
		(continuing)
	...you just gotta have faith.

We widen to reveal Willie removing his black coat and hanging it upon a
wooden peg. The room is simple...white plastered walls and bamboo
furniture. As Willie unsnaps his celluloid minister's collar....

			TIKI'S VOICE
	You give blessing now?

ANOTHER ANGLE - TO FEATURE THE WHITE-ENAMELED STEEL BED

Sitting on the bed under the mosquito netting, darning a hole in one of
Willie's socks is Tiki. Willie looks at her and smiles. There's a knock
at the door.

			WILLIE
		(to himself)
	Mein Gott.

He pulls the suspenders back on.

			WILLIE
I'll give you your blessing when you finish my sock.

As he walks past the bed to the door, we move in close on Tiki, as she
goes back to her needlework.

ON THE FRONT DOOR

as Willie opens it to reveal a tall man standing in the shadows.

			WILLIE
Yes. What can I do for you, my son?

A leather-gloved hand gives Willie a bible. Willie slowly opens it to a
page he knows to look for.

WILLIE'S POINT OF VIEW - PAGE IN BIBLE

A Nazi swastika has been drawn across the page.

			WILLIE'S VOICE
	Come in.

CLOSE ON MONOCLE

His eyepiece glints in the moonlight as he steps forward.

					CUT TO

EXT. BORAGORA DOCK - NIGHT - ON THE GOOSE

Corky and Jack are still working on the engine as Jake drops down from the
wing beside them. He's all smiles.

			JAKE
A Boson on the Hancock's got Jack's eye. They anchor here, Friday
and he'll take 350 bucks for it!

			CORKY
	What I tell ya, Jack!

Jack looks at Jake, then puts his head down into his paws and stares out
to sea.

			JAKE
He'll believe it when he sees it.
		(beat)
Corky, I'm gonna check the charts. You need anything?

			CORKY
	A couple of beers.

Jake just looks at him, knowing that if he gives Corky the beer he'll be
gone for the night.

			JAKE
	Corky....

			CORKY
		(chastised)
	Yah...I know.

Jake stares sadly at Corky for a beat then remembers something and fishes
inside his flight jacket.

			JAKE
	I almost forgot...
		(pulls out chocolate bar)
Picked this up from an American sailor on Tagataya this morning.

CLOSE ON CORKY

Eyes bulging as he unwraps the bar.

			CORKY
American chocolate. I haven't had American chocolate since we flew
those nuns to the leper colony last...last....

BACK ON ALL

as Jake smiles, knowing Corky can't remember.

			JAKE
	Last April.
		(hopeful)
	You coming, Jack?

Jack doesn't move.

			JAKE
		(disappointed)
	Well...see you guys later.

He turns and walks down the long pier towards town.

CLOSER ON CORKY AND JACK

Corky watches Jake for a long moment, then turns to Jack.

			CORKY
You know, sometimes Jack, you can be real unfair.

The dog stares at Corky, then sighs, gets up and trots off down the pier
after Jake. We hold on Corky who smiles, licks his fingers clean and goes
back to work on the engine.

EXT. CHURCH - NIGHT

The door of the little thatched roof manse opens and Willie exits, glances
around, then motions for Monocle. The two men quickly cross the moonlit
road to the church.

INT. CHURCH - NIGHT - MOVING WITH WILLIE AND MONOCLE

as they walk briskly down the tamped-earth aisle, past the wooden pews
towards the simple teakwood altar beneath the church's only stained-glass
window. Willie speaks in angry whispers. Monocle is calm as ice.

			WILLIE
Why didn't der Gestapo inform der Wehrmacht?

			MONOCLE
Why didn't der Wehrmacht inform der Gestapo?

			WILLIE
This is insanity! You sabotage der plane bringing in the
Bibles...Bibles which can tell me where the island with the Idol is!

			MONOCLE
		(cuts in)
I didn't know your Bibles were on that plane. Even if I did, my
orders were to kill an American spy.

			WILLIE
You said you killed him on der dock!

			MONOCLE
		(fondly remembering)
	Jah.
		(beat)
But that was after der plane took off. I thought he was going to be
	on it.

			WILLIE
You Gestapo don't think, all you do is act!

			MONOCLE
I do not have to answer to you.

			WILLIE
	We shall see about that.
		(looks him over)
And why in Gott's name are you wearing a German Naval uniform!

			MONOCLE
		(it's so obvious to him)
We don't wear uniforms in der Gestapo.
		(brushes a piece of lint)
	This is my cover.

Willie can't believe his ears. He shakes his head in amazement and
disappears behind the altar.

BEHIND THE ALTAR

Willie opens a hidden panel and leads Monocle down into the dark recesses
beneath the altar.

CLOSE ON A MATCH

as it's struck. It lights a lantern revealing a tiny room beneath the
altar. There is a map of the Pacific with various marking in German, a
photo of Hitler and a large transmitter. Willie throws a switch and the
radio's big tubes glow orange. He puts on the headset, turns the dial and
begins to tap out a message on the key. Monocle seats himself on the edge
of the table, lighting a cigarette without removing his black leather
gloves as he takes in the room. It's the kind of place he likes.

			WILLIE
		(tapping out message)
We shall let Berlin settle who's in charge here!

Monocle manages to blow a little smoke Willie's way, as we....

EXT. COLONNADE ABOVE THE MONKEY BAR - NIGHT

The rooms of the hotel all face the ocean so the tradwinds can blow
through the louvered doors. As Jake and Jack come down the open balcony
toward their room, a storm is threating to dump rain at any moment.

			JAKE
		(in the middle)
	...I really did think one...
		(barks)
	...meant yes. Honest, Jack.

Jake pulls his key and starts to unlock the door. Jack begins to growl.
Jake looks at him, unlocks the door and lets it swing slowly open. Then
he stands aside and motions for Jack to charge in.

CLOSE ON JACK

He's not nuts. He sits.

BACK ON JAKE

He looks at Jack, shakes his head, and dives into the room.

INT. HOTEL ROOM - ON JAKE

as he his the floor, rolls over once and comes up on the balls of his feet
ready to fight. The light snaps on and Jake spins toward the wall switch.

			JAKE
	Aha!

JAKE'S POINT OF VIEW - BOBBI

looking quite seductive in a one-piece dress that buttons down the front,
with more buttons open than closed. Her hand is still on the light
switch.

			BOBBI
		Hi!

She kicks the door shut with her foot.

CLOSE ON JACK

about to walk in as the door slams in his face.

ON JAKE AND BOBBI

He's embarrassed and feeling a bit silly, so naturally he....

			JAKE
		(defensive)
What the hell are you doing here!

She crosses to Jake, hips swinging, throws her arms around his neck.

			BOBBI
I heard how you and Francis fought over me.

She pulls his head down and kisses him. A good old-fashioned deep tonguer
that Jake returns. As they part....

			JAKE
		(incredulous)
	Francis?

			BOBBI
	Un-huh.

Bobbi gives him another kiss, pulling him even tighter to her body. As
Jake wiggles loose....

			JAKE
Bobbi, you lied to me! You told me your husband was a runaway. It
	wasn't him, it was you!

			BOBBI
So I got who did what backwards.

			JAKE
Swell, your 'Francis' damn near took my head off this morning. Look
	at me!

			BOBBI
	Let me kiss your booboos.

There is a crack of lightning and rain pelts down on the roof. Over
this....

			SARAH'S VOICE
	Jake? You in there?

			BOBBI
		(wary)
	Who's that?

EXT. COLONNADE - CLOSE ON SARAH AND JACK

She's kneeling in front of the door, scratching Jack's ear. It's pouring
down behind her.

			SARAH
		(straining to hear)
	What'd you say?

BACK INSIDE - TIGHT ON BOBBI AND JAKE

Jake covers Bobbi's mouth with his hand before she can speak.

			JAKE
		(calls out)
	Just a minute...
		(whispers to Bobbi)
Keep your mouth shut until I get rid of her and you can spend the
	night here. Deal?

She nods and he slowly removes his hand from her mouth.

EXT. COLONNADE - ON SARAH AND JACK

as the door opens and Jake appears. He doesn't let it open more than a
foot or so.

			JAKE
	Hi.

			SARAH
	Hi.
		(beat)
I saw Jack sitting out here and thought...maybe you didn't know...

			JAKE
	Oh...thanks.

He opens the door a little wider for Jack, who instead turns and trots off
down the colonnnade.

			SARAH
Guess he's still upset about the eye.

			JAKE
	Guess so.

For a moment, the two of them just stare at each other. Then....

			SARAH
	Ah...Louie offered me a job.

			JAKE
	Hey, that's terrific.

			SARAH
It'll help keep me honest till Sam gets here....
		(smiles)
Or better yet, when he does.

Jake smiles.

			SARAH
You were right about the boat from Tagataya. Won't be in till
	tomorrow.

			JAKE
	Yah.

After a beat.

			SARAH
		(straight)
Look, Louie told me you asked him to give me the job and I just
	wanted to thank you for....

			JAKE
		(cuts in)
You'da done the same for me.

			SARAH
	Sure.
		(pauses)
Well, sleep tight and don't let the bed bugs bite.

			JAKE
		(smiles)
Don't let Louie hear you say that.

He closes the door and we hold on Sarah, a bit confused.

INT. JAKE'S ROOM

Bobbi is studying him as she lights a cigarette. Jake strips his shirt
off and washes in the basin.

			BOBBI
	So that's what you're a sucker for...the innocent type.
		(off his look)
Why does that kind always fool guys like you?

Jake towels off and puts on a clean shirt. Bobbi is surprised.

			BOBBI
Hey. You said I could spend the night.

Jake puts on his cap and throws the jacket over his shoulder.

			JAKE
	You can.
		(beat)
I didn't say I was gonna spend it with you.

She comes from the floor with a roundhouse slap that cracks against his
cheek. For a moment they just stare at each other, then....

			BOBBI
	You bastard.

			JAKE
		(softly)
	How'd you know, Bobbi?

She stares at him a beat longer then exits, slamming the door behind her.
Jake stares after her, looking a bit sad, then collapses on his bed.

EXT. COLONNADE - NIGHT - ON BOBBI

as she clicks down the balcony in her high heels. A door opens and
Sarah's head pops out. She's surprised to see it's Bobbi.

			SARAH
Oh. I heard a door slam and thought....

			BOBBI
		(finishing)
That it was Jake? Nope. Just me.

She flashes a crocodile smile.

			BOBBI
But you can have him now, honey. I'm done.

And with that she walks, hips swinging, down the colonnade.

INT. SARAH'S ROOM - CLOSE ON SARAH

as she closes the door and turns into camera. The look on her face is
disappointment and then anger. She crosses the room and lifts the heavy
suitcase onto the bed. As she does.

			SARAH
		 (to herself)
Serves you right. You're here to do a job. Not get involved with
some hairy-chested ape who can't even take care of a one-eyed dog!

CLOSE ON THE SUITCASE

as Sarah unstraps the thongs and flips the lid open. Inside the lid is a
map of the islands and a 1938 almanac. The bottom of the suitcase is
filled by a radio transmitter.

cutting through the swells, her wake boiling white in the moonlight.

INT. RADIO SHACK - CLOSE ON SPARKS

as he absently taps his pencil against the pad. He glances up at the
twenty-four hour clock. The Navy Commander seated beside him smiles at
his impatience.

			COMMANDER
	She's still probably decoding.

			SPARKS
	Yes, sir.

INT. SARAH'S ROOM - MOVING DOWN ANTENNAE WIRE

from where it's attached to the ceiling, to the suitcase, and eventually
to Sarah, who's seated at a dressing table with the headset around her

finishes....

			SARAH
		(reading message)
German radio traffic indicates Weirmarcht and Gestapo both seeking
Gold Monkey. Island of Baku involved.

She looks up in surprise and whistles, then checks the Almanac and begins
to tap out a message on the key.

INT. RADIO SHACK - ON SPARKS

as he finishes decoding Sarah's message and reads it to the Navy
Commander.

			SPARKS

Message received and understood. Can explore Baku.

	Will Sam join me?

The Commander sighs.

			COMMANDER
I was afraid she'd ask that.

Sparks nods and begins sending.

EXT. SUNRISE OVER BORAGORA

as the lagoon turns from pink to violet, the quietness of the dawn is
shattered by the roar of four, huge rotary engines running up to full
throttle.

ON THE CHINA CLIPPER - STOCK

The big amphibian speeds across the lagoon, its powerful engines thrusting
the hull through the water like a speed boat. It breaks clean from the
water and climbs up into the rising sun and home.

CLOSE ON JAKE

He and Jack are standing at the village end of the pier watching the
Clipper climb away. He looks down at the dog.

			JAKE
We'll take her home someday, Jack.

Jack barks twice.

			SARAH'S VOICE
		(calling)
	Jake! Wait up.

He turns as Sarah runs up beside him. She's wearing pants and a man's
shirt tied at the waist. She looks cute walking down the dock beside Jake
and Jack.

			JAKE
What are you doing up so early?

			SARAH
	I'm going with you.

			JAKE
	What?

			SARAH
Well, Louie isn't going. He's scared to death of that volcano and
since I did throw the cargo out, maybe I can help you find it.
	Besides, it might be fun.

She looks up at him and he notices her red eyes.

			JAKE
		(softly)
	You've been crying.

			SARAH
		(defensive)
Don't be stupid. I'm just allergic to something on the island.

She runs forward toward the Goose with Jack trotting after her.

			JAKE
		(to himself, meaning himself)
	...or someone.

ON CORKY

as he climbs down from the wing, covered with grease and bone tired after
being up all night.

			SARAH
	Morning, Corky!

			CORKY
		(smiles)
	Hiya, Sarah. Morning Jake.
		(looks up at engine)
	Well...she's good as new...almost.

Jake swings in under the wing and eyeballs the engine.

			JAKE
Corky, I don't know how you do it.

Corky goes into his "aw shucks" act, then remembers....

			CORKY
	Jake, there's something....

Jake climbs up on the wing and walks toward the cockpit.

			JAKE
		(finishing)
	...you gotta tell me.

			CORKY
		(can't remember)
It had to do with the Goose....

			JAKE
	The starboard carburetor?

			CORKY
	No....

CLOSE ON JAKE

He reaches the cockpit and stops.

JAKE'S POINT OF VIEW - CLOSE ON MONOCLE

seated in the pilot's seat smiling his sinister smile.

			MONOCLE
	Guten morgen, Herr Cutter.

			CORKY'S VOICE
	Jake, I just remembered....

			JAKE/CORKY'S VOICE
	...somebody's here to see you.

INT. GOOSE COCKPIT

Monocle slips from the pilot's seat to the copilot's as Jake climbs in and
eyes him suspicously.

			MONOCLE
I hope you don't mind. I was amusing myself...by imagining what it
must be like to be a pilot.

			JAKE
I don't mind...I do it all the time.

Monocle smiles, a little.

			JAKE
	What do you want?

			MONOCLE
To help. I heard you wanted the eye back.

CLOSE ON JAKE

He looks over his instruments and starts priming the port engine.

			JAKE
	Yah, I did. But....

He hesitates. Something clicks in his head. He turns to Monocle.

			JAKE
		(continuing)
...what does that have to do with you.

WIDEN TO INCLUDE THE GERMAN

			MONOCLE
If I could get it for you? Would that be worth say...a flight to my
	ship?

			JAKE
	Depends.
		(beat)
	Where's your ship?

			MONOCLE
	Anchored off Tagataya.
		(holds up briefcase)
I came over to pick up maps for our captain which came in on the
clipper. Your goose could save me a day getting back.

			JAKE
	Okay. Where's the eye?

			MONOCLE
		(smiles)
	I have it.
		(beat)
Won it from that frog sailor after you left the game. It's in my
	locker on board ship.

CLOSER ON JAKE

He knows Monocle is lying. After a long pause, Jake smiles and pulls a
cigar, biting the end and spitting it out the open window.

			JAKE
	Fritz. You gotta deal.

			MONOCLE
		(lighting Jake's cigar)
	Goot.

Off Jake's eyes as he puffs....

			DRAGON LADY'S VOICE
	I don't like it, Willie.

					CUT TO

EXT. BAKU LAGOON - DAY

The Dragon Lady's power yacht is slowly entering the lagoon, the red
dragon flag fluttering from its stern. Above the lagoon, the towering
double-peaked volcano, wreathed in clouds.

CLOSER ON THE YACHT

Princesss Kogi's warriors stand in rigid attention on the foredeck as the
Captain carefully maneuvers through the narrow opening in the reef.
Astern, Willie in his Weirmacht uniform, Dragon Lady in safari gear, and
Toto in samurai armor, stare up at the huge volcano.

			WILLIE
		(looking at volcano)
Neither do I, but we must find at least one of the Bibles they
	dumped.

			DRAGON LADY
I'm not talking about the volcano.
		(off Willie's look)
I don't like eliminating Jake Cutter.
		(slight smile)
	I'm...a little fond of him.

			WILLIE
Princess Kogi, Berlin was quite clear. The Gestapo agent is taking
orders from me and I ordered him to keep Jake, and his plane away
from here, not kill him. Like you, I enjoy having Jake around, even
if I do suspect he's an American agent.
		(looks to volcano)
	It looks quiet enough.

			TOTO
		(sniffing the air)
	Is goint to erupt.

			WILLIE
		(touch panicked)
	When?

			TOTO
		(shrugs)
	Maybe next year.

Willie relaxes.

			TOTO
	Maybe today.

Willie stiffens. Toto loves it.

POINT OF VIEW - DRAGON LADY'S YACHT

as it drops anchor. A motor launch is lowered and the Dragon Lady, Toto,
Willie and the four samurai climb in. As it pulls away toward the white
sand beach....

CLOSE ON MONKEY

watching all this from the jungle. He snarls, quietly, revealing his
fangs and melts into the undergrowth.

					CUT TO

EXT. GOOSE - DAY

as it passes over a string of emerald-green islands at five thousand feet
on its way to Baku.

INT. REAR CARGO AREA - CLOSE ON MONOCLE

seated in the last seat, staring straight ahead, working his gloved hands
to relieve his tension.

INT. COCKPIT OF GOOSE

Our heroes are crowded into the tiny cockpit. Jake at the controls.
Sarah in the copilot seat. Jack between them on the deck and behind him,
Corky, standing with both arms on the seat backs. Corky is listening very
intently to the engines. Finally, he reaches forward and nudges the port
throttle slightly. Jake glances up at him.

			CORKY
		(off Jake's look)
They were a little out of sync.

Jake turns back forward Corky casts his eyes over the instruments, leans
forward again and this time adjust the fuel mixture.

			CORKY
		(off Jake's look)
	You're running 'em too lean.

CLOSER ON CORKY

He obviously needs a drink. He reaches forwrd again only this time Jake
slaps his hand.

			JAKE
	Corky...
		(beat)
	You shoulda stayed in Boragora.

			CORKY
		(smiles)
And let you burn out my engines! No sirree Bob! Besides. Whatta
you gonna do when that starboard carburetor quits?

Jake looks out the window toward the engine.

CLOSE ON STARBOARD ENGINE

purring smoothly.

BACK TIGHT ON ALL

Sarah looks like she's going to kill Jake. Corky licks his lips...the
lack of booze is really getting to him. Jake turns back.

			JAKE
	She's running fine.
		(beat)
Stow your tool kit in the aft locker and keep an eye on Fritz back
	there.

			CORKY
Aw, Jake, I don't like being back there with him....

			JAKE
		(angry)
Who's captain here! I want the tool kit in the aft locker and your
	tail back there. Now!

Corky turns and heads to the rear.

			CORKY
		(chagrined)
Sure Jake, right away. Right away.

Jack follows Corky.

CLOSER ON SARAH AND JAKE

She watches Corky and Jack moving aft, then turns to Jake with a
vengeance.

			SARAH
		(furious)
You really are something! Corky's jumpy 'cause he needs a drink!
But all you know is he irritates you, so you climb all over the
	little guy.

			JAKE
Listen Sarah Stickney White. Corky and I have been together since
he pulled me out of a burning tri-motor in Guatemala. You've known
him one day! I know best how to take care of him and hold his
boozing to a minimum. Damn! What am I explaining all this to you
	for anyway?

			SARAH
	I don't know!

			JAKE
And why are you so mad at me. Last night you were trying to get
	into my room.

			SARAH
		(shocked)
	I was not!
		(beat, then nastily)
And even if I was, what would you have done with two of us in there?
		(quickly)
	Don't answer that!

			JAKE
	Two of you?
		(catches on)
You saw Bobbi leave my room.
		(smiles)
	You're jealous.

			SARAH
		(outraged)
Jealous. Jealous! Jake Cutter you are the most ego-centered man I
have ever had the displeasure of meeting!

CARGO HOLD - MOVING WITH CORKY

as he walks past Monocle. The German looks at him and smiles. Corky
smiles, but he's nervous...he's afraid of the German. Jack, of course,
growls as he trots by. Corky open the aft storage compartment and sets
his tool kit inside.

CORKY'S POINT OF VIEW - SHELF IN AFT COMPARTMENT

There's a Hershey bar lying on it. Corky put down the tool kit and picks
up the bar.

MOVING WITH CORKY

as he unwraps the chocolate bar and takes the seat in front of the tall
German.

			CORKY
		(to Monocle)
I knew Jake wasn't really mad at me.

Monocle just glints at him.

INT. COCKPIT - ACROSS JAKE AND SARAH

She's still ranting at him as we return.

			SARAH
		(in the middle)
...just because a girl tries to be friendly you think she's making a
pass. Well where I come from girls don't make passes!

			JAKE
	You gotta mirror?

			SARAH
They wait for the guy to...
		(looks at him)
	What?

			JAKE
		(low voice)
A makeup mirror. I need one.

			SARAH
Do I look like the type who would go off to a volcanic island with a
	makeup mirror?

Jake just stares at her, finally, she blinks and reaches into her shirt
pocket pulling out a small square mirror and hands it to Jake, who
positions it on the console, adjusting its angle.

CLOSE ON THE MIRROR

as Jake adjusts it so he can observe Monocle in it. We see Corky's
reflection as he enjoys the chocolate and behind him, the German.

			JAKE'S VOICE
Fritz back there thinks I'm flying him to Tagataya.

BACK TIGHT ON JAKE AND SARAH

Jake finishes adjusting the mirror and goes back to flying the plane.

			SARAH
	Why would he think that?

			JAKE
Cause that's what I told him. See he lied to me, so I lied to him.
I think it all has something to do with you.

			SARAH
		(bit uptight)
	Me?

			JAKE
Bobbi said something last night about not being fooled by you.
Bobbi was talking sexually, but I started thinking politically.
That engine we lost yesterday was sabotaged. Only three reasons
someone would do that...to kill me. Jack. Or you.
		(beat)
	I think it was you.

			SARAH
		(nervous)
You ought to write for the movies...your fantasy's are incredible!

			JAKE
Maybe. But any minute now Fritz is going to realize I've been
slowly changing our heading...flying away from Tagataya and toward
Baku. And if I'm right...about my fantasy...he'll realize I'm on to
	him.
		(smiles to Sarah)
	I don't fight well, Sarah, when I don't know what I'm fighting
	for...or who.

CLOSE ON SARAH

She glances from Jake to Monocle, then back to Jake. She doesn't have
much choice.

					CUT TO

EXT. BAKU JUNGLE

The thick, green vegetation parts as one of the samurai hacks his way
through. He is followed by the others and eventually the Dragon Lady,
Willie and Toto bring up the rear. We can hear the raucous calling of
birds and somewhere in the distance, a primal scream.

			WILLIE
	What was that?

The Dragon Lady looks at Toto, whose hand automatically goes to his sword.
He shakes his head...he doesn't know either.

			DRAGON LADY
The islands are full of animals the world has never seen.

Before Willie can answer, there is a shout up ahead. A samurai comes
running back down the freshly cut track and bos to the Dragon Lady, he is
holding a torn water-soaked bible in his hand.

CLOSER

The Dragon Lady takes the bible, turns it over and hands it to Willie.

			WILLIE
		(excited)
Jah. Jah. This is one of the bibles for the shipment!

Willie frantically flips through the remaining pages then he angrily
tosses it aside.

			WILLIE
		(bit crazed)
Genesis is misisng! We have to find a bible with Genesis!

The Dragon Lady motions to the samurai who races back up the trail.
Willie is breathing hard...very excited. He begins to crash around in the
underbrush looking for bibles. The Dragon Lady calmly pulls a cigarette
and Toto lights it as they watch Willie go nuts.

			DRAGON LADY
Willie. Don't you think it's time you told me what was in the
	Bibles?

ON WILLIE

lifting leaves, pulling down vines, tearing up the foliage.

			WILLIE
		(panting)
The illustration of the Garden of Eden in those bibles is a copy of
the last painting our men sent back before they disappeared. Berlin
believes it's of the island they were about to explore...an island
	inhabited by monkeys.
		(beat)
We have to find one of those Bibles to find the island with the
	monkeys.

CLOSE ON TOTO

staring into the jungle. He slowly pulls his samurai sword.

			TOTO
	No, we don't.

TOTO'S POINT OF VIEW - LARGE TIBETAN MONKEY

staring at them from the foliage a mere ten meters away.

					CUT TO

EXT. ON THE GOOSE - DAY

as it roars past camera toward an island on the horizon.

INT. AFT SECTION - ON CORKY

Chin on his chest, snoring away. We pan past him to Monocle, who's
staring out the window.

MONOCLE'S POINT OF VIEW - ISLAND ON THE HORIZON

its twin peaks penetrating the clouds...Baku.

BACK ON MONOCLE

He turns slowly forward, his face an icy mask. He reaches into his
briefcase, but keeps his eyes on the cockpit. We pan down to reveal him
screwing a silencer on the barrel of his Luger.

COCKPIT - ON JAKE AND SARAH

Sarah is talking just loud enough for Jake to hear her over the roar of
the motors. He's shocked, but his eyes are on the makeup mirror.

			JAKE
	You're a what?

			SARAH
	An agent.

			JAKE
	For Uncle Sam?

			SARAH
	Well not for Uncle Adolf.
		(adds)
...we may not be at war with Germany yet, but it's inevitable. The
isolationists won't let us arm, so F.D.R.'s doing everything he can
to keep Germany from developing new weapons.

			JAKE
Don't tell me the Germans can't develop a heat-resistant alloy if
	they need it.

			SARAH
Eventually. But why give them the technology on a silver
	platter....

CLOSE ON JAKE

His eyes narrow slightly.

			SARAH'S VOICE
	...or rather a gold monkey.

ON MONOCLE

as he brings the Luger up to the back of Corky's seat. He's going to kill
him.

CLOSE ON JACK

He's been watching this from his nest. He charges.

ON JAKE

He sees Jack tearing across the aisle toward Monocle...it's what he's been
waiting for. He throws the yoke over hard and yells to Sarah....

			JAKE
	Hang on!

AFT SECTION OF GOOSE - ON ALL

Three events occur simultaneously: Jack tears into Monocle's leg.
Monocle's reflex jerks the gun up and fires a round through the ceiling.
And the Goose banks sharply throwing both men and the dog across the
compartment into the seats on the other side.

ON THE GOOSE

as it dives in a sharp bank through the clouds.

COCKPIT - ON JAKE AND SARAH

He pulls the Goose out of the banking dive, levels off, then grabs Sarah's
hands and puts them on the yoke.

			JAKE
	Hold her level!

He's gone before Sarah can even react. She sits, terrified, trying to
hold the plane in level flight.

AFT COMPARTMENT

as Jake runs down the aisle. Corky is blinking...stunned. Jack has never
let go of Monocle's leg. Monocle is bringing the gun around to shoot Jack
as Jake kicks it out of his hand and drags the German to his feet. Jake
slugs him on the jaw, sending the Gestapo agent flying into the rear
bulkhead.

CLOSE ON MONOCLE

as he slides, unconcious, to the deck, his monocle still firmly locked in
place.

FEATURING JAKE

as he picks up the Luger and helps a wobbly Corky to his feet.

			CORKY
		(dazed)
	What happened? Starboard engine quit?

			JAKE
	No.

The starboard engine coughs, backfires and dies. Corky looks at it.

			CORKY
	Yes, it did.

			SARAH'S VOICE
		(a scream)
	Jake!

Jake hands the Luger to Corky and races back to the cockpit.

COCKPIT - ON SARAH

She's trying to hold the Goose level, but it's diving to the right. Jake
fights his way back into the pilot's seat and grabs the yoke.

			JAKE
		I got it!

He feathers the starboard engine and cuts back, slams the port throttle.
The plane continues its spiraling dive.

			JAKE
		(to the Goose)
Come on, baby. Don't do this to me.

ON THE GOOSE

as it continues to spin towards the island of Baku.

INT. COCKPIT - ACROSS JAKE AND SARAH

The twin needles of the peak slide by as Jake slowly pulls the Goose of
the spin. They level off in a slight nose down attitude, losing altitude
rapidly but no longer in danger of crashing into the ocean. Sarah takes a
deep breath of relief as does Jake.

			JAKE
		(looks at her and smiles)
Don't worry. Nothing else can go wrong.

There is a roar and huge ball of fire and pumice blows out the top of Baku
as the volcano erupts.

					FADE OUT

			_END OF ACT FIVE_

			_ACT SIX_

FADE IN

EXT. ISLAND OF BAKU - DAY - ON THE VOLCANO

A thick black cloud of ash boils out of the twin peaks and trails off to
the south, darkening half the island.

ON THE GOOSE

as it skims across the lagoon on the sunny side of the island with its
starboard engine feathered. It splashes down hard and slows instantly.
With only one engine running, it taxis toward the beach in a right hand
turn.

INT. COCKPIT - ON JAKE AND SARAH

They're breathing a little easier as Corky appears behind them and Jack
scrambles between his legs to join the group.

			CORKY
		(nervous relief)
Told you that starboard carburetor wouldn't hold. Didn't I tell
	him, Sarah.

			SARAH
		(laughs)
	You sure did, Corky.

Jack barks twice.

			CORKY
	See. Even Jack....

			JAKE
		(cuts in, smiling)
Okay. Okay. I get the message.

At that moment the sound of the engine grows louder as the aft cargo hatch
is opened.

			JAKE
		(spins to look)
	Corky....

EXT. GOOSE - CLOSE ON MONOCLE

as he dives into the lagoon and swims away from the Goose.

INT. COCKPIT - ON ALL

as they watch him swin away from the plane toward the beach.

			SARAH
	Stop him!

			JAKE
I can't taxi left with only a port engine!

ON MONOCLE

still wearing the monocle, of course, as he reaches shore and scrambles
into the jungle.

COCKPIT - CLOSE ON JAKE

as he watches him disappear.

			CORKY
	Sorry, Jake.

			JAKE
	At least he's not armed.

					CUT TO

EXT. JUNGLE - DARKENED SIDE OF THE ISLAND - SERIES OF SHOTS

of the Dragon Lady's landing party under attack. The battle is fierce and
with the exception of Willie's Luger, it's samurai sword versus claw and
fang. In the thick jungle the Tibetan monkeys have the advantage. As the
party retreats toward the beach, Toto, for all his toadiness, proves to be
a tremendous fighter. Bloody, but unbowed, he is the last samurai
defending the rear while the others escape.

THE BEACH

Willie and Dragon Lady race for the motor launch as Toto and the samurai
battle the five huge monkeys that are left. Out on the ocean sand the
tide turns, and with a slashing charge, Toto forces the monkeys back into
the jungle, snarling and pawing at the air.

CLOSER ON TOTO

He struts across the sand to the boat, the happy, victorious warrior.

ON MOTOR LAUNCH

as Willie turns to the Dragon Lady.

			WILLIE
	We must go back!

			DRAGON LADY
Willie, you're as cuckoo as Adolf.

Willie turns and looks up at the volcano as Toto and the samurai reach the
launch and climb aboard.

WILLIE'S POINT OF VIEW - VOLCANO

as the smoke pours out of the twin peaks.

			WILLIE'S VOICE
But the Idol is up there somewhere. The monkeys prove that!

BACK CLOSE ON WILLIE

as he stares at the volcano which is rumbling and roaring.

			WILLIE
		(preaching)
Der Fuhrer is depending upon me to find it for Germany and I will
	not let him down!

The motor on the launch starts. Willie blinks and turns.

WIDER ON ALL

Dragon Lady is seated lighting a cigarette. Toto is at the helm. The
boat is starting to move out into the lagoon.

			DRAGON LADY
Willie you've made your speech for the Fatherland...now will you get
	in the boat.

Willie doesn't hestitate, he leaps into the boat as it pulls away. Toto
smiles.

					CUT TO

EXT. BAKU LAGOON - DAY - ON THE GOOSE

her nose pulled up on the beach, Corky and Jake at work on the starboard
engine. Sarah and Jack are on the sand staring up at the volcano as it
belches fire and ash over the other side of the island.

CLOSE ON CORKY AND JAKE

Corky wipes the sweat from his eyes and shakes his head.

			JAKE
	How long?

			CORKY
	Two...maybe three hours.

There is a dull roar from the volcano. Corky continues to work, but Jake
looks up.

JAKE'S POINT OF VIEW - THE TWIN PEAKS

as the eruption continues.

			JAKE'S VOICE
	Make it one.

BACK ON JAKE

He stands, adjusts the holster strapped around his narrow hips, then drops
from the wing to the sand. He pulls Monocle's Luger from his waistband
and hands it to Sarah.

			JAKE
	Stick close to the Goose.

			SARAH
	Where are you going?

			JAKE
		(checking his pistol)
	After Fritz.

			SARAH
		(surprised)
	Why?

			JAKE
I can't leave him here with the island about to blow up, no matter
	what he's done.
		(holsters his pistol)
I gotta give him a chance to save his hide.

			SARAH
	I'm going with you.

			JAKE
		(firmly)
No, you're not. You're going to stay here and guard Corky and the
	Goose.
		(to Jack)
	And so are you, understand.

Jack barks twice. Jake nods and turns, but Sarah grabs him by the arm.

CLOSER ON BOTH

as she pleads with him.

			SARAH
Jake, I've got this thing pretty well figured out. Fritz's job was
to prevent us from coming here, right? Which means the Germans must
have someone else here already. Which means this has to be the
island with the Gold Monkey. Which means....

Jake grabs her by the shoulders.

			JAKE
...that if you don't listen to me, I'm gonna take you over my knee
	and spank you.

She just stares at him as he turns and runs down the beach to the tracks
left in the sand by Monocle.

			JAKE
		(to himself)
	Women.

			SARAH
		(to herself)
	Men.

ACROSS CORKY

as down the beach he sees Jake disappear into the jungle. He turns and
looks at Sarah. She spins and starts up the beach in the other direction
with Jack tagging along. Corky shakes his head and goes back to work on
the carburetor.

			CORKY
		(to himself)
	Children. They're all children.

MOVING WITH SARAH AND JACK

as she kicks the sand, she's so pissed. The volcano rumbles and she looks
up it. Jack suddenly sniffs the air. He barks and runs into the jungle.

			SARAH
	Jack?
		(beat)
	Jack what is it?

She takes off after him.

ON JACK

trotting through the thick foliage, sniffing, on a trail.

MOVING WITH SARAH

as she tries to keep up with the dog.

CLOSE ON JACK

He comes upon a stream flowing down the mountain into the lagoon. He
stops and begins to bark, the hackles up on his back. He is still barking
as Sarah breaks through the brush behind him and freezes at what she sees.

SARAH'S POINT OF VIEW - DECOMPOSED BODIES

of Hanus, Kurt and the giant guardian monkey, caught in the roots of a
mangrove tree at the end of the stream.

BACK ON SARAH

as she moves slowly forward and stares at the remains of the monkey.

			SARAH
		(awed)
	My God. It's true.

She steps into the streams and gingerly removes the map cas from Hanus'
remains.

					CUT TO

JAKE

as he follows the trail left by Monocle through the thick jungle. Jake is
evidently a pretty good tracker, picking up subtle signs of the German's
passage...a broken vine, a footprint in the moss, etc. The volcano
rumbles, the jungle shakes and there is a loud explosion. Jake looks
up....

JAKE'S POINT OF VIEW - THROUGH THE JUNGLE CANOPY

of smoke and fire pouring out of the top of the volcano.

					CUT TO

SARAH

also looking at the eruption. The volcano belches loudly for a few more
seconds then settles down. Sarah looks back at the map she's unfolded
from Hanus' case, then rolls it back up and moves into the jungle stream.

ON JUNGLE STREAM

as it cascades down the side of the volcano cutting a path through the
thick green vegetation. We can hear the waterfall thundering somewhere
ahead over the occasional rumble of the volcano. Jack appears, jumping
from rock to rock as he works his way upstream. Behind him, Sarah comes
wading through the knee-deep water.

CLOSE ON JACK

He stops on a rock beneath a huge, leaf-covered vine, his ears pricked up.
His hackles rise and he begins to growl. Sarah comes up beside him and
kneels down, the Luger at the ready.

			SARAH
		(whisper)
Easy Jack. What is it, boy?

She lifts the thick vine hanging across the stream.

SARAH'S POINT OF VIEW - THE JUNGLE POOL

and on the lava ledge...the Guardian Monkey.

BACK TIGHT ON SARAH AND JACK

Sarah stares in awe at the huge primate.

			SARAH
		(whisper)
	Jack. He's magnificent!

Jack growls...he doesn't agree. Just then the volcano rumbles and another
explosion rocks the jungle.

ON THE POOL

as boulders, shaken loose by the explosion, plummet down the side of the
volcano and splash into the pool. The Guardian turns and disappears into
the veil of water.

CLOSE ON SARAH AND JACK

Her eyes wide in amazement.

			SARAH
		(whisper to Jack)
	A cave.

Jack starts to bark twice, but senses soemthing behind them and spins just
as....

ON MONOCLE

standing behind Sarah, he brings a lava rock down on Jack's head knocking
him out.

WIDER ON ALL

Sarah starts to scream but Monocle stifles it with one gloved hand and
grabs the Luger from her with the other.

			MONOCLE
I wouldn't scream unless you want that monkey for company.

Sarah stares at him a beat, then nods. He releases her and she immediatly
turns to Jack to see if he's alive. Monocle checks the Luger, then pulls
Sarah to her feet.

ON THE WATERFALL

as the Guardian monkey comes back through the falling water, now that
boulders have stopped crashing down.

ON MONOCLE AND SARAH

He rips a vine and uses it to tie Sarah to a tree.

			SARAH
		(angry whisper)
You animal! If you've killed Jack, I'll get you. I swear it!

Monocle blinks at the thought, then smiles.

			MONOCLE
		(laugh)
	Why are you whispering, Fraulein?

Sarah looks toward the Guardian monkey through the trees and then snaps
her face back to Monocle's sneering face. She pales, knowing what he
intends to do. Monocle lifts the Luger toward her face....

					CUT TO

JAKE

moving along the trail, near the mountain stream. We can hear the
waterfall in the distance. Suddenly a shot echoes through the jungle.
Jake runs toward the sound.

					CUT TO

JUNGLE POOL - ON THE GUARDIAN

as he leaps from his perch to the edge of the pool.

ON SARAH

tied to the tree, watching the huge monkey through the leaves as he
approaches. Monocle is nowhere to be seen. The monkey pulls a vine away,
sees Sarah and flashes his fangs in a snarl. Even though she's
terrified....

			SARAH
		(weak smile)
	Nice monkey.

The monkey swipes the air with a giant paw and moves toward her. Before
he reaches her, Jack, now conscious, attacks, biting him on the leg. The
monkey screams in pain and turns to face his tormentor. The little
terrier has already zipped around him and now bites him on the ass.

MOVING WITH MONOCLE

as he scales the rocks towards the lava ledge. In the jungle behind him
we hear the monkey snarling, Sarah screaming and Jack barking. Monocle
reaches the ledge and disappears through the veil of falling water.

WIDE ON SARAH

as the monkey swipes at Jack. The little terrier is deliberately working
the monkey further and further away from Sarah.

ON JAKE

as he breaks through the thick vegetation and sees Sarah. Jack and the
monkey have disappeared into the jungle, but we can hear them barking,
snarling not far off. Jake stares at Sarah.

			JAKE
Didn't I tell you not to leave the plane.

			SARAH
		(crazed)
	Untie me!

Jack and the monkey growl and crash in the jungle a few meters away. Jake
doesn't move an inch.

			JAKE
I told you what I was going to do.

			SARAH
		(plea)
	Jake!

He hesitates a beat, then finally unties the vine wrapped around her
wrists.

					CUT TO

INT. CAVE BEHIND THE WATERFALL

Monocle stands inside the cave letting his eyes adjust to the dim light.
The cave is dark and covered with green slime...it's a very scary place.
Monocle moves forward slowly. After a few feet, the light form the
enterance fades. He pulls a lighter, flicks it on. There's an old torch
in the wall. He lights it and slowly moves forward.

MOVING WITH MONOCLE

as he penetrates the dark, slimy cave. To the side of his vision, beyond
the flicker of the torch, lizards and other things slither and slide away.
Monocle burns away a huge cobweb hanging from the ceiling to the damp
floor. He steps forward and then stops, his monocle glinting in the flame
of the torch.

MONOCLE'S POINT OF VIEW - SKELETON REMAINS

of the last monk to die. Sitting with a sword across his bony lap, his
back to a green obsidian pedestal.

ON MONOCLE

as he edges closer.

MONOCLE'S POINT OF VIEW - THE GOLD MONKEY

atop the pedestal, covered with green scum, its jeweled eyes flashing in
the flicker of the yellow flame. Only a foot high, it is a powerful
sculpture of a monkey crouched upon a half-ball, its right arm pointing
directly at camera.

ON MONOCLE

as he steps forward, eye glinging to grasp the treasure.

EXT. WATERFALL - ON JAKE AND SARAH

as they climb the rocks to the ledge and disappear through the falling
water.

INT. CAVE - ON JAKE AND SARAH

as they stop just inside the entrance, letting their eyes adjust.

THEIR POINT OF VIEW - BACK ON THE CAVE

in the flickering yellow light of the torch they can see Monocle holding
the Gold Monkey.

			JAKE'S VOICE
		(shouts)
	Fritz!

Monocle spins bringing the Luger up to fire. Jake shoves Sarah to the
damp floor and fires. The bullets richochet off the slimy walls and the
reports echo and reecho in the dark cave.

THE GUN BATTLE - SERIES OF SHOTS

Neither Jake or Monocle are able to hit the other in the dark. It appears
to be a standoff until the cave shakes and rumbles as another eruption
begins. This one is so powerful that part of the ceiling starts to come
down. Through the noise and falling debris....

			JAKE
		(shouts)
Give it up! You can't get out unless we let you.

CLOSE ON MONOCLE

He knows it's true.

			JAKE'S VOICE
Come on. Before we all die.

After a moments hesitation, Monocle tosses the Luger into the center of
the cave. Then he picks up the Idol and slowly stands.

ON ALL - FEATURE JAKE AND SARAH

as Monocle walks towards them, holding the idol in his hands.

			SARAH
	You found it!

			MONOCLE
	Jah.

He holds out the idol to her and as she reaches for it, he drops it. Jake
and Sarah automatically move to catch it.

CLOSE ON MONOCLE'S GLOVED HAND

We hear the click and see the blade drop into place.

BACK ON JAKE AND SARAH

Jake also hears the click and grabs Monocle's hand just in time. As the
two men struggle backwards into the waterfall, Sarah clutches the idol.

EXT. WATERFALL

The two men come fighting through the water and onto the ledge.

EXT. BAKU VOLCANO

Another eruption sends rocks and pumice arching thousands of feet into the
air.

EXT. GOOSE - DAY - ON CORKY

He finishes snapping the cowling in place and runs along the wing to the
cockpit as super-heated rocks tossed out by the eruption spalsh, sizzling
into the lagoon around the Goose.

INT. COCKPIT - ON CORKY

He licks his lips as he fires up the starboard engine. It coughs and
sputters. He hits the starter again.

					CUT TO

EXT. WATERFALL - ON JAKE AND MONOCLE

as they continue the struggle. The eruption is dropping hot rocks onto
the pool. Finally both men fall, locked in each others arms into the
water. Sarah appears on the ledge clutching the idol. She looks down
into the pool.

SARAH'S POINT OF VIEW - THE POOL

The water is bubbling as Jake and Monocle struggle somewhere beneath the
surface.

CLOSE ON SARAH

scared to death for Jake.

			SARAH
Come up, Jake...oh please come up!

BACK CLOSE ON THE POOL

Someone breaks the surface and gasps for air. It's Jake, choking and
spitting water. As he struggles out of the pool, Sarah climbs down beside
him, grabbing and kissing him.

			JAKE
		(coughing)
Now, follow the stream back to the Goose. I'm going after Jack.
		(beat)
You know, Sarah, this doesn't change anything. You're still getting
	that spanking.

Before she can answer, Jake is into the jungle. She takes the idol and
starts across the pool towards the stream. Something rolls under the
water near her and she screams.

CLOSE ON MONOCLE

dead, of course, as his body surfaces and rolls over...the monocle still
firmly fixed in place in his eye.

					CUT TO

EXT. JUNGLE - DAY - MOVING WITH JAKE

as he follows the torn trail the great monkey has left chasing Jack. Jake
stops and listens. He whistles. Waits a beat. Whistles again.
Something screams and a beat later, Jack comes tearing back down the trail
to Jake.

CLOSE ON BOTH

as Jake drops to one knee and grabs Jack by the ears, nearly taking his
eye patch off as he hugs him with joy.

			JAKE
You old son of a gun!

He snaps his head up as he hears the rustling of the monkey coming through
the jungle towards them.

			JAKE
	Let's get outta here!

Jack barks...once. And takes off. Jake spins, a look of surprise on his
face.

			JAKE
	Aha! One bark is yes!

Then Jake takes off after him.

ON THE POOL

as Jack comes flying out of the jungle and runs downstream with Jake on
his tail. Just as they disappear, the Guardian Monkey emerges from the
jungle and swings across the pools after them.

					CUT TO

INT. GOOSE COCKPIT - ON CORKY

as he hits the starter again.

			CORKY
	Come on, mama. Catch.

ON THE PORT ENGINE

as it belches...and then catches.

BACK ON CORKY

grinning. He fires up the starboard engine. The second it catches, he
guns the throttles and turns the Goose to sea.

ON SARAH

as she comes running down the beach to the Goose. She climbs up on the
cockpit and hands Corky the Gold Monkey. He grimaces as he touches the
slimy idol.

			CORKY
Pardon my French, but what the hell is this!

			SARAH
Never mind. I gotta go back for Jake!

Just then, Jack comes racing out of the jungle and across the sand.

			CORKY
Oh, oh...he doesn't run like that unless somethin's chasing him.

ON JAKE

as he comes racing out of the jungle behind Jack.

			CORKY'S VOICE
	...neither does he!

The monkey appears on the beach behind Jake.

ON THE GOOSE

Jack leaps from the beach into the cockpit.

RACING WITH JAKE

as Corky pours on the power and the Goose starts pulling away from the
beach. Jake runs into the water and catches the open rear hatch.

ON THE MONKEY

as he stops, realizing he can't catch the plane. The volcano rumbles and
the monkey turns, and with a final snarl, lumbers back into the jungle.

INT. COCKPIT OF GOOSE

as Jake, dripping water, slips into the pilot's seat.

			JAKE
	Jack...where's Jack!

			SARAH
	Where do you think?

Jake glances back.

CLOSE ON JACK

panting hard, nestled between the parachute and life jacket.

THE VOLCANO

as it erupts again, sending more super-heated rock and magma into the air.

ON THE GOOSE

She lumbers across the lagoon, hot rock splashing around her like falling
shrapnel.

INT. COCKPIT - ON ALL

Jake has the throttles to the firewall. Sarah's strapping in. Corky's
eyes are glued to that starboard engine.

ON STARBOARD ENGINE

roaring at full power.

ON JAKE

shoving the yoke in and out.

ON THE GOOSE

picking up speed. Spray flying from the hull.

ON SARAH

using body English, trying to help get the Goose into the air.

			SARAH
	Come on, baby. Fly. Fly!

Jake glances at her and smiles.

ON BAKU VOLCANO

as she blows the double peaks clean off, sending a broiling ball of super-
heated air and pumice over the ocean and hot lava flowing down her side.

EXT. DRAGON LADY'S YACHT - CLOSE ON DRAGON LADY

watching the volcano erupt through powerful field glasses.

DRAGON LADY'S POINT OF VIEW - THE GOOSE

as it flies low over the water away from the erupting island.

ON DRAGON LADY AND WILLIE

as she lowers the glasses and turns to the tall, thin Colonel.

			DRAGON LADY
I thought your Gestapo friend was going to divert Jake.

			WILLIE
One can never rely on the Gestapo.

Dragon Lady laughs and we....

EXT. MONKEY BAR - NIGHT - ESTABLISHING

The usual music and rowdy noises. Over which we hear....

			CORKY'S VOICE
This should take about thiry seconds.

INT. MONKEY BAR - NIGHT

the piano player is pounding out "As Time Goes By." We follow Gushie, the
handicapped barman, as he wheels through the crowd and delivers a couple
of beers to the French sailors and native girls they have picked up.

INT. SIDE ROOM OFF MONKEY BAR

The doors to the bar are closed, but we can see the crowd through the
louvered doors and hear the noise. Louie, Corky, Jake, Sarah and Jack are
all gathered around the billiard table. Corky's squatting on the floor
washing the green slime off the monkey Idol in a bucket full of gasoline
as the others watch. Jack suddenly growls. Jake moves to the door and
opens it revealing Willie, dressed as the Reverend, of course.

			WILLIE
		(smiles)
	Good evening, children.

			JAKE
	Come on in, Reverend.

He enters and Jake closes the door. Jack continues to growl.

			JAKE
	Jack. Stop it.
		(whisper to Sarah)
I can't figure why he hates the preacher.

Willie, trys to keep his cool, but he can't take his eyes off the Idol.

			WILLIE
I'd heard you'd found something on Baku, Jah?
		(beat)
	Mein Bibles?

			SARAH
	Afraid not, Reverend.

Corky finishes cleaning the Idol and lifts it onto the center of the
billiard table under the light.

CLOSE ON THE IDOL

It radiates under the bright light.

			CORKY'S VOICE
		(slightly awed)
But we did find a Gold Idol.

ON THE GROUP

as they stand mesmerized before the Monkey Idol. Finally....

			JAKE
Louie...what do you think it's worth?

Louie sniffs and examines the Idol closely.

			LOUIE
		(bit of a smile)
I'd give you a couple of hundred francs for it.

			JAKE
	For a Gold Idol!

			LOUIE
	Brass.

			WILLIE
	Impossible!

			LOUIE
	Rub it and see.

As Willie steps forward to rub the Idol, Corky looks to Jake.

			CORKY
Can I have a beer now, Jake.

			JAKE
		(stunned)
	Sure.

Corky immediately goes into the bar for his beer.

CLOSE ON SARAH AND JAKE

Jake shrugs and turns to Sarah

			JAKE
Well, I guess they won't be giving you any ticker-tape parades in
	New York.

Sarah is staring at the Idol.

			SARAH
I'm not going to New York.

			JAKE
	Or DC.

			SARAH
		(still staring at the Idol)
	I'm staying here.

			JAKE
		(pleased)
	Y'are?
		(recovering)
I mean, what's there to spy on here?

Sarah glances at Willie and Louie, then whispers to Jake....

			SARAH
		(warning)
	Jake....

CLOSE ON WILLIE

as he rubs the Idol and sees his hand turn black from the brass.

			WILLIE
	Mein Gott. It is brass!

He turns to the others, he's quite shaken.

			WILLIE
If you'll excuse me, children, it's been a rather tiring day.
		(to himself)
I think I'll go home and give Tiki my blessing.

He walks out through the bar.

ON LOUIE, SARAH AND JAKE

as they watch him go.

			SARAH
		(innocently)
I thought he blessed Tiki earlier?

Louie and Jake exchange looks.

			JAKE
I guess he didn't get around to it.
		(changing the subject)
	How about a beer? Jack?

Jack barks once and Jake sighs.

			SARAH
		(consoling)
He'll feel better when you get his eye from that Bosun on the the
	Hancock tomorrow.

			LOUIE
	The Hancock?

			JAKE
Yah, she's anchoring for weekend liberty.

			LOUIE
Not the Hancock. She had to sail for the Philippines on emergency
	orders. Some crisis or another.

CLOSE ON JACK

He looks at Jake with his one good eye, then spins and trots out into the
Monkey Bar.

INT. MONKEY BAR - ON JACK

as he trots out of the game room and down the bar past Corky who's
drinking his beer. Jake follows, then Sarah and finally Louie, carrying
the Brass Monkey.

			JAKE
		(a plea)
Jack. Be fair. How could I know? I'll get your eye back. I
promise. Even if I have to fly to the Philippines to get it.
		(beat)
	Trust me!

Jack barks once and keeps going.

			CORKY
That means no, Jake. See if he barks once....

			JAKE
		(losing it)
	Corky!

			CORKY
		(innocently)
	Yah, Jake?

Louie places the Brass Monkey on the bar. Sarah stiffles a smile and
Jake....

			JAKE
		(sighs)
Can I have some of your beer.

			CORKY
		(all smiles)
	Sure, Jake.

As Corky hands him the beer....

					CUT TO

EXT. MAIN STREET OF BORAGORA - ON WILLIE

as he walks down the darkened street toward the church. Behind him we can
hear piano music coming from the Monkey Bar. Willie is not happy.
Suddenly out of the darkness Toto appears. Willie is startled which is
exactly the effect Toto wanted to create. He smiles. The Dragon Lady
steps out from behind Toto. Willie looks around nervously.

			DRAGON LADY
	Well?

			WILLIE
	They found it.

			DRAGON LADY
Then all we have to do is take it from them.

			WILLIE
	Don't bother.
		(off her look)
	It's...it's made of brass.

The Dragon Lady looks at him and begins to laugh. Then Toto starts. Even
Willie can't help it, he begins to laugh, too.

					CUT TO

EXT. BAKU VOLCANO - NIGHT

The violent eruptions have ceased. But the island and the surrounding
ocean is lit by the red-hot flow of glowing lava. We hear the laughter
continuing from the previous scene, then....

			DRAGON LADY'S VOICE
		(still laughing)
All that effort just to find a brass monkey!

INT. WATERFALL CAVE - NIGHT CLOSE ON GUARDIAN MONKEY

sitting deep in the recesses of the cave, lit by the glow of nearby
flowing magma. We start to pull back, revealing a half-dozen of the
surviving monkeys huddled behind the Guardian. As the pullback
continues....

			WILLIE'S VOICE
		(laughing)
Maybe you're right. Maybe we were a little cuckoo believing such a
	legend.

We pull out of the mouth of the cave. The waterfall is no longer flowing,
instead red hot lava pours down from the volcano. As the pullback
continues we realize the cave is the open mouth of a huge monkey idol.
The ledge the Guardian sat on is the finger at the end of the pointing
arm. And the idol, a hundred feet high and draped with flowing lava, is
still unmelted.
